week from Saturday but the' sound of the fife
and drum has seldom been'heard in Brussels,
of late years. In years gone by there used to
be Orange celebrations here with members
of the L.O.L, and their True Blue Lady
affiliates, from a large area in .attendance.
Bystanders lined the streets and gathered' on
lawns to watch King Billy, astride •his
prancing white steed, leading the parade :of
his followers who believed in the ideals and
aims of the Orange Order. Not all, watchers
agreed with these but came to admire their
fervour and hear the sound of the fife and
druni bands. There will be the traditional
celebration in Cambridge this year and hits
service for those who want to attend.

We have all heard the expresion thii is .
his, or her "Achilles Heel". In this day an?.
age it refers not to a physical weakness but
to a weakness of character. It might be
"greed is his AChilles Heel" 'or "arrogance
is her Achilles Heel." Do you know where
the expression originated? It came from
mythology. The sea goddess Thetes, mother
of Achilles, is said to have held Achilles by
one heel and dipped him in the River Styx to
make him invulnerable. That.one heel', kept
out of the water, remained vulnerable -
weak. In the end it led to his death. In just
such a way a person's character Achilles
Heel might lead to their ultimate downfall.

People do use some odd circumstances to
appeal a conviction. Here is an unusual
reason reported in The Journal, published
by the Addiction Research Foundation.
Most Unusual Grounds for Appeal of a
Drug Conviction: In January, 1980, an
Ontario man convicted of conspiring to
import marijuana submitted an affidavit to
the Ontario Court of Appeal asking for a new
trial on the grounds that his first trial was,
'unsatisfactory in that defence counsel was,
by reason of impairinent by alcohol or drugs,
unable to carry out his responsibilities
effectively.' '.(Transcripts from the first trial
showed that the' defence lawyer had attemp-
ted to convince the jury of his client's
innocence with remarks such as, "in spite of
the width, the ribs of the law are different."
This was termed "gibberish" by the lawyer
handling the case on appeal, who also
pointed out that the defence lawyer in
question was suspended 'from the Law
Society of Upper Canada at the time of the
trial but was unaware of the suspension
because he .was "too drunk during that
period to open his mail.")
