St. Stephen's Anglican
Church Gorrie, celebrated
its 110 Anniversary on
Sunday, June 15.
St. Stephen's are fortunate
that they still have the
records that go back to the
very beginning of this con-
gregation.The first services
were held in the homes and
the first person to be
baptized by an Anglican
Clergyman is recorded as
being James Wiggins, in
1856. The records show that
it was not until early 1869
that the actual building of the
present church was started.
In July of that year the corner
stone was laid by the very
Rev. Issac muth, Dean
of Huron and later Bishop of
the Diocese of Huron:
St. Stephens's was filled to
overflowing for the services'
on Sunday and many former
members returned to St.
Stephen's to join the con-
gregation in offering Thanks-
giving and Praise for the fact
that the guiding hand of God
had been with this church
down through the yearS since
1856 and to ask His Blessing
upon it in the future:
A dedication was made
during the. Morning Service
"To the. Glory of God and in
memory of Sarah and
Norman Wade." The
memorial was given by. their
son Robert Wade and Family
and consisted of the re-
storation of three leaded
stained glass windows.
The Rev. E.C. Atwell,
former Rector,Was the guest
preacher at the 11 o'clock
service of Holy Communion.
The clergy participating
were: The Rev. Can
Orrence Laramie, The Rev.
Harry Jennings and the Rev.
E. Atwell. The choir with
Mrs. Brain Underwood
accompanying them. The
ladies of the church served a
picnic dinner for everyone
present immediately after
the service and this allowed
the people time for
fellowship and sharing, and
renewing of old friendships.
A. half hour of con-
gregational singing started
7:30 p.m., led by Mrs.
ENanor' Laramie and Mr.
David Daunt, a student at
Renison College, Waterloo
and a member. 9f the Ford-
wich congregation played the
accordion accompaniment.
The Rev. Kenneth
Anderson was the guest
speaker at the service of
Evensong. Mr. Anderson
was a member of St.
Stephen's as a young man
going to school and had very
happy memories of the years,
he lived in Gorrie. His
Father, the Rev. George
Anderson. Was also present
and took part inthe services.
A light lunch was served and
with great reluctance, the
people left for home warmed,
in the glow that comes from'
fellowship.
