A.large delegation attend-
ed the regular June 2 meet-
ing of the Huron County
Board of Education to protest
the, elimination of the second
Grade 13 English 'course at.
Central Huron Secondary
School in Clinton.
The board passed a motion
that encourages the principal
at CHSS to offer the, Englist,
581 course if a teacher volun
teers to accept an overload in
his. timetable as a result of
• the delegation's requests.
In an address to the board,
Jack Holmes, a parent of a,
CHSS student,• complained
that "the credit system has
funneled certain students so

requirement for university
entrance.
Director D.J. Coch rane
said he sympathized with the
delegation, but that "we're
looking at teacher loading
here and contract probleMs.
The only way it can be done
is by hiring, a. half time
teacher at CHSS.
• "I realize that there arc
some doors closed to some
students based on past decis-
ions," he shrugged.
During, the board meeting
recess, the Education Com-
mittee met and returned with
the recommendation that the
course' should be offered if a
teacher can be found to
accept the additional course.
The same,kind of problem
was encountered at South
Huron Secondary School in
Exeter when the' Latin 350•
course was dropped from
scheduling. There were bare-
' ly enough students to take
the*course, but no teacher
available. The problem was
solved however,* when a
member of the staff, David
McClure, offered to teach the

t
Philip. Street,•••a third Year
student at.the University of
Toronto and a fermer student
at CHSS, told the board that
the course has proven "in-
valuahle" in his English
studies at university. He
reminded the board that
there are three maths and
three sciences offered at the
year five level and, that they
are alSo necessary.
"Two 'English courses arc
scarcely enough as it is; and I
feel 'that the elimination of
i English, 551 at CHSS is a
discrimination 'against, stu-
' dents who wish to, take, it,"
Street stated. English 551 is
a course that deals• specifical-
ly with Canadian• and met-
lean literature and . is not a
