The federal government
will not provide interest rate
subsidies to farmer's, This
announcement came from ag•
minister Eugene Whelan.
However he also said that
Farm Credit Corporation
should assist fanners by debt
consolidation and possibly a
moritoritim: on debt repay-
ntents for one year
,The funds available to
F.C.C. have been reduced -
to' $555 million this year
from. $628.5 million -in
1979/80.
Tony McQuail,', West
WawarioSh Township, a
director of Huron County
Federation of Agriculture,
said about Mr. Whelan in
Ottawa: "Whelan overlooked
our major concern, our need
for security for young
'farmers. -The people
probably most hurt are those
who started, farming relative-
ly, recently. They had to pay
high interest land prices.
They are, faced with high
input costs and low
cominoditY ',prices."
He continued: "It is 'hard
er and harder for farmers to
pay off debts. Unless young

farmers can repay their
debts, there Will be little
incentive for them' to start.
Whelan was insensitive to
that point."
The president of Huron
County Federation of Agri-
culture, Merle Gunby, says
about the federal govern-
ment; "We're being offered
an insignificant amount of
money in relation to what
other segments of the
economy get. A reduction in
F.C.c. loans is a turn in the
wrong direction.
't1 do not feel apologetic in
asking for lower' interest
rates from the government
because it, was government
policy that created high
.-interest rates." .
