' The first Roth's Food
Market appeared as' part of
Seaforth's Main:. Street
aimost five yyears
Six months after Ken and
Cheryl Roth • opened their
grocery store, crowded aisles
and ' cramped shelves in-
dicated business was doing
well and it was time for an
expansion.
Today., approximately
three months from the
store's fifth year in business
.and several.expansions later,
Ken Roth is expanding his
store again. This ' time,
however, he's not just
knocking down,a few walls -
he's moving everything to, .a
new 9125 square foot store at
a new location at the south,
end of Main Street.
Mr. Roth, 30 years of age,
said he started in the grocery
business in , Kitchener at the
age of. 17. It was there, he
said, he worked for Highway,
Market for five years and
then managed a Knechtel
store for three years,'
obtaining a good background
in the business.
His wife Cheryl, who does
the book keeping and any-
thing else that has to be
done; Mr. Roth describes as;t
"my partner and my right
arm." .
Mr. Roth said the reason
they opened the store in.
Seaforth was simply because
they felt the town could use
Another grocery outlet.
He attributes his success
in ,Seaforth over the past five
years to giving the people
what they want.
"I think we offered
service; better prices and
selection," he said.
The Roths lave been
working for the past seven
weeks to prepare the new
store for the, May 15 opening;
however, the new store
concept began before
Christmas when Mr. Roth
heard of the new bUilding's
availability.
The move, he said, may be
a little premature, but he
said he feels it is necessary.
"We may be crazy with
interest rates the way they
are, but there are several
benefits to the move."
By moving, to the south
Main Street location, Mr.
Roth said he, will be gaining
44 feet 'of frozen food shelf
space, 16 'extra feet for
produce, 20 feet for dairy
produce and an additional 20
feet of meat counter space,
over the old store.
Aside from additional
footage, the new location will
offer free parking for 36 cars
at the south side of the store,
something different from the
old spot,
Mr, Roth said a major
factor involved in his
decision to move was that if
he didn't .take the new store,
some other food " retailer
would.
"We're just trying' to
protect our market in town,"
he said.
He said he hoped the
larger location would attract
shoppers from surrounding
towns, to help support the
bigger operation.
Even in their new location,
Mr.' Roth said prices will
remain low.
of our prices are
prices and Kitchener is "the
most competitive area in
Ontario" he said "and this
guarantees that are prices
are low."
He explained that
Knechtel food stores give
independent retailers in-
creased buying power s,o that
they can offer better prices
and specials.
He describes his store as
being, an associate store with
the Knechtel's 22 ^. store
operation.
"One thing we do to keep
the overhead down is to
refinish old equipment so it
looks good and works good."
