SECTION Marriage ceremoot here are traditional iF . BY DIANE VAN DOOREN Marriage ceremonies in the past few years have not changed all that much, said local ministers and priests. Often we hear, about unusual cases, like the couple who wanted to be married under- water or the couple who took out divorce insurance before the big day but those weddings seem to be from- the big cities. flee in.small towns, local, priests and ministers seem to agree that weddings have remained much the same in the past ten, years. Reverend Wilena. Brown of Varna United Church, think s couples are getting more involved and more serious. She said that she likes to get to knoir the couple before the wedding to discuss their hopes and plans. Couples don't very often write their own vows in her church, she said. "They don't take 'the opportunity." Rev. Brown said thai she has refused to marry couples due to immaturity or for not having a soundly based reason for wanting to marry. "Any unknown factpr increases the risks of Marriage," she said. Reverend. Robert:'' McMullen of Brucefield feels there is a greater use of more contemporary services. He said that there are more people, using modern vows. Before Rev. McMullen will 'marry a couple herequires that they come to see . him three of four times so he can get to know them. He counsels them and has them fill out questionaires. He said his counselling is based on their answers to the questionaires. Father Wes Gutowski, of Wingham said that at the present time weddings are basically the same as 10; 20, or even 100 years' ago. The church has, underlined the importance of incorporating the sacrament of marriage with the sacrament of the Eucharist, lie said. The. Bishop, said Father Gutowski, has suggested that all couples take a pre-marital course. He feels it is good for the couple getting married. He has never refused to perform a marriage but sometimes, he said, under his direction "a couple may put their wedding off for a year or completely. Father Gutowski has only been in the area for eight weeks but he Pies to make family visits to get to know his parish. He said that family visits are vital to the existence of the church. "A priest can no longer sit in the Rectory and wait for visits from parishoners," said Father Gutowski.
