Plant early To help get the home grounds greening fast, lawn care experts at Vigoro, manufacturers of the most complete line of lawn and garden products, advise home- owners to plant early this spring. Lovely, lush "emerald car- pets" don't just grow overnight, but require careful nurturing along with a proper balance of food, water and tender loving care. A green lawn Won't stay green without essential nutri- ents. As grass grows, it con- sumes the earth's nutrients and supplies must be replenished through seasonal fertilization. Fertilize by April Fertilizer should be applied no later than April for best growing and greening results and again in September to build up root.development for the next spring. The three most vital nutrients needed to produce long-lasting deep green lawn are nitrogen, phosphate and potash. Nitrogen stimulates top groWtlito create greening; phos- phate is key for proper root de- tvelopment; and potash acts as a catalyst between the two and strengthens the grass plants. For even growth and deep greening, a slow, time-release type of fertilizer such as Vigoro works best. Formulated• with patented IBDU, Vigoro releases nitrogen as moisture penetrates the soil to provide long-lasting feeding up to three months after applica- tion. For a lush lawn Once the fertilizer is applied, lawns require generous doses of water and proper maintenance to achieve a rich, deep green color. When watering, remember to water the ground deeply. A light sprinkling can often do more harm than good as it evaporates . quicklyand keeps roots near soil level begging for more. Deep watering enables roots to penetrate further into the soil ensuring hardiness and stronger growth. For a lawn to stay deep rooted and healthy, it must be watered at least once a week and until the soil is wet to a mini- mum of six inches. A typical oscillating or rotat- ing sprinkler will moisten lawn to the depth in about three hours. More water means more growth and that means more grass to cut. Mowing should be done once a week between April and October. There is no one proper mow- ing height for all grasses; how- ever, most lawns should never be cut shorter than two inches or "scalping" can occur, leaving the lawn "burnt" or discolored. Rule of thumb - A good rule of thumb fox mowing lawns is: never cut off more grass than you leave.
