held the fourth meeting
"Nutrition and Weaning"
with a large number of
mothers attending from as
far away as Goderich. and
, Ripley: ...The hostess of. this
series, Mrs. Terri Xorstanje,
was presented with a book
"Nursing Your Baby" by
Karen Pryor as thanks for
having opened her, home to
interested mothers.
The Leader, Mrs. Barbara
Kerr, opened the meeting
with , a history of the La Leche
League and their work in
helping mothers to' breast-
feed. The mothers then intro-
duced themselves and their
little ones and told how they
had learned about the
League. Most mothers had
heard about the LLI, through
pre-natal classes and .other
mothers.
Discussion was opened to
consider the nutritional
make-up of colostrum and
breastmilk, which is the
superior infant food for baby
until the middle of the first
year. The mothers ex-
changed ideas on which
foOds were most nutritious
when beginning solids, and
how to go about introducing
other foods. Questions about
weaning were asked and it
was recommended that the
'Process be gradual, with lots
of love.
Family nutrit ion was
touched upon, followed by a
tasting time of three kinds of
porridge, with lots . of
different toppings (no sugar)'
such as granola, raisins,
seeds, fruit. Many came back
for: seconds.
The mothers were invited
to attend the next series
which will be held at Mrs.
Myra' Stuart's, Wingham on
May 20th at 8 p.m. Grand-
mothers are especially in-
vited to attend this meeting.
