Belgrave Kin pia n rec complex
BY DEBBIE RANNE'Y
The Belgrave and
District Kinsmen Club is
planning .a recreational
complex, Morris Township
Council learned when they
had' a delegation from Ken
Hopper 'and Alan Bridge
Monday.
The club's plans for the
first year include purchasing
2.8 acres of land from Lorne
Humphrey and landscaping
it. The club Wants East
Wawanosh to purchase the
property near the present
arena and is Willing to cover
the total cost of the land plus
any interest charges that
would be incurred. The cost
of this land is $40,0001
$15,000 of which Mr.
Humphrey is donating.,
There is a Community
Centres grant for 25 per cent
of the total cost leaving the
actual purchase cost at
$15,000.
In the ,.second year they
plan on moving the baseball
diamond over to the newly
acquired property. A parking
lot would then be situated
upon the old ball diatnond in
an effort to provide safer and
mote convenient parking for
the arena patrons. A new
side entrance to the arena
would be built to comple-
ment the 'adjoining parking
In the third year, the
Kinsmen would build a
playground adjacent to the
new ball diamond and start
planning for a community
centre or hall to be erected
with ample room left for a
number of other recreational
facilties such as lawn bowl-
ing, tennis . courts, picnic
area, and horseshoe pits,
The present arena would
remain,
In a telephone interview,
Ken Hopper said the idea for
the complex had come about
after a year of meetings.
Mr. Humphrey had
planned to use the land for
senior citizens apartments in
his subdivision but was
turned down.
"Once we had some land
to work with we tossed
around a bunch of ideas. Our
main objective now is to get
the parking off the high-
way," he said.
He said they hoped to have
the complex started this year
and to have most of it done in
two or three years.
The location of the new
complex would be directly
south of the existing ball
park.
Also at the meeting,
council accepted the gravel
tender of George Radford of
Blyth at $1.99 a cubic yard.
One other tender was
received, that of Joe Kerr of
Wingham who gave a. price
Of $2.10 a cubic yard-.
Tile Drain Loan applica-
tions were accepted for
Ernest and Annette Lewing-
ton, Herbert Oakes and
Vernon Sorners. Council also
passed a tile drainge loan
by- law.
Morris found they owed
the Wingham Rural Fire
Committee $800 for fire calls.
Council once again
decided to hold a meeting to
which the public would be
specially invited and to invite
them to Sit in from 11 to 12 on
April 25 to review township
business.
