THE BRUSSELS POST, FEBRUARY 27, 1980 S students are p public speakers THE SENIOR WINNERS Brenda Richmond was the Grade 8 winner and Melinda Hamilton the Grade 7 winner picked to go on to the Legion speaking competition when. Brussels Public School held a speaking contest on Wednesday. Standing behind the girls are ,the judges for the event--Jerry Dillow of the ,Royai Bank, Sinclair VVardqp an English and Georgraphy teacher at F.E. Madill Secondary School in Wingham and Mrs. Jean Kirkby, formerly a teacher at the school. Brenda Richmbrib placed second and Melinda Hamilton placed third at. the Legion competitions on Monday night. (Photo by Langlois) PUBLIC SPEAKING, WINNERS AT BRUSSELS SCHOOL — These four students won prizes in'the junior class when Brussels Public school held its speaking competitions on Wednesday. The, students from left' are: Gary Martin of Grade 4, Karla King of Grade 5, Ruth Ann Watts of Grade 5 and Karen Knight of Grade 6. Karla King also placed first at the Legion speaking competition on Monday night and will compete in the Zone finals. Ruth Ann Watts placed second at the Legion competition. County Roman Catholic Separate 'School board spent most of the meeting Monday night on the Aims and Objectives of the system. William Eckert, Director of Education, said, "It is my hope that a general review and redefinition of these objectives, at this time, will continue to ensure progress and improvement in what I believe to be a prOgressive and productive school system." The board accepted the resignation of custodian Peter Gummow from Immaculate Conceptiori School,. Stratford, effective March 15, for personal reasons. The position is being advertised. The ceiling tile at the new addition at St. Joseph's school in Clinton is not 'satisfactory and will be re- placed following a complaint to the Canadian Portable Structures, the general contractor, and to the sub- contractor. A number of trustees have already indicated they are interested in attending the 1980 Congress of Education to be held in Montreal in May -- only three may attend at board expense. The finals in public speaking for the various area winners from the 19 separate schoosl in Huron and Perth Counties will be held in Dublin Thursday night at St. Patrick's School. The Public Speaking Con, test for. Brussels Public' School was held on Wednes- day, February 20th in the school auditorium. A number of parents were present and their interest was greatly appreciated. The judges were Jeanne Kirkby, former teacher—at Brussels Public School; Jerry Dillow, Manager of the Brus- sels Branch of the Royal Bank, and Sinclair Watdrop, English and Geography teacher at F.E. Madill Secondary School The • judges met with all the speakers at the conclusion of the contest providing suggestions for future speak-,. ing engagements. The following is a list of the speakers, their topic and the winners: Grade 4: Gary Martin, My Dog Toby. Grade 5: Ruth Ann Watts, Hat Pins; Charlene Stephen- son, Nashville Tennessee; Karla King, Step Dancing. Winner - Karla. King, Grade 6; Dawn Maxwell, Food; Nancy Exel, The Blind, Karen Knight, Scary Mom- ents. Winner - Karen Knight Grade 7: Wendy Martin, . Carlsbad Caverns; Melinda Hamilton, A Painful Experi- ence; Kevin Johnston, My First Experience with 4-H. Winner - Melinda Hamilton Grade 8: Mariann Scott, Cadets; Brenda Richmond, The Youngest Member of the !Family; Chris King, Piano, 'Winner; krenda Richmond„ Overall Grade 4, 5 and 6 Winner - Karla King; Runner up - Ruth Ann. Watts. .Overall Grades 7 & winner - Brenda Richmond; ..runner up - Melinda Hamil- ton. The overall winners and the runner-up speakers rep- resented Brussels Public School in a Speak-Off with. Grey Central Public School to determine who' would rep- resent the. Brussels Legion in the Zone Contest. The speak- off was held on Monday, February 25 at BO P•in`• in the Brussels Legion, The students were coached by Mr. Morton, Mr. Prior, Mrs. Cousins, and Mrs. Ray- mond. Mr. Scott mentioned at the contest that the inter- est and help provided by the parents was most valuable. The students, teacher, and parents are to be corrimepd- ed for the excellent quality of speeches presented THE LEGION'S ESSAY WINNER — Wendy Martin of the Brussels school wrote a prize winning essay on Why I wear a Poppy, for the Royal Canadian Legion Literary Contest which won first prizes at the Branch and Zone Levels. Here, the Brussels Legion's Youth Education Officer Jim McNeil presents Wendy with an award for placing second at the District level.
