Along with the public
speaking winners, Wendy
Martin of Brussels. Public
School was also presented
with an award at the Brussels
Legion on Monday night for
her prize winning essay on
wearing, the poppy.
The essay was written for
the Royal Canadian Legion
Literary Contest for 1980 and
won first prizes at the Branch
level and the Zone level. It
plaCed second at the District
level and Royal Canadian
Legion Youth Education
Officer Jim McNeil gave
'Wendy an award on Monday
night for placing second.
tier essay reads:
"WHY I WEAR A POPPY"
I wear the poppy with
pride because to me the
poppy emphasizes my
country's devotion to peace.
Many of the soliders died in a
struggle to bring peace to my
country Canada. Now I want
to serve my country during
peace.
At the end of the war the
poppy was a symbol of death
and remembrance; re-
membrance for the people
whose lives were devoted to
the service of our country; a
reminder of the blood which
was shed on those fields
With the federal election
long over and the shock
resulting from the lrge
Liberal majority almost Worn
off,, it seems rather strange
that we would be reporting
on the election again. But
this time, the results come
front Mr. Simpson's History
401 class. History 401 deals
with Canadian politics and
issues, and the Gr. 12's
involved in the course have
dealt extensively with the
election. On Friday,
February 15, two, days after
the political candidates'
meeting in our school, the
class held a vote for our
riding. Several students on
their spare also dropped in to
cast a ballot and the
following results were
tabulated:
Conservatives - 13
Liberals 13
N.D.P. - 12
The tie was broken
however when two late,
Liberal supporters showed
up to vote. The strong
-N.D.P. vote was most de-
finitely a result of the
candidates' meeting, as the
students almost unanimously
agreed that Mr. McQuail was
'the only one who gave de-
where the brilliant red poppy
later grew. The poppy now is
a symbol of life and bright
hope for the future.
Today the replica poppy I
wear, made by disabled war
veterans, reminds me of the
red poppy on Flanders
Fields.
In my great land I can
enjoy many benefits and
privileges. If I live in such a
way as to keep my country
great and free the next
generation may also ex-
perience peace.
In what way can 1 live so
that peace will be safe-
guarded and bright hope for
the future will be ensured? I
can be at peace with my
family because each day
demands that I love my
family even when things
don't go my way. So wearing
a poppy reminds me that
peace in the family is a must.
I come in contact with
many people who are my
neighbours. To make up my
community, I need them. I
need my community so I can
function. If I live at peace
with my neighbours places
finite, established policies.
Although the vote was rather
unrealistic in its results, it
showed that students will
vote for the man who can
prove that he knows what
he's talking about, as well as .
the fact that they are not
swayed by ' tradition or
parental favourites.
A vote was also taken to
see what kind of government
the class felt would be voted,
in. Of the 25 who voted, 22
decided there would pro-
bably be a Liberal minority,
two thought a Liberal
majority was more likely, and
one felt the Conservatives
would take a majority
victory.
So even though this is a
very small number of
students surveyed, it was
still interesting to note the -
differences in the History 401
results and ,the February 18
results. If the class results
are any indication, the future
voters will be much more
willing to listen to N.D.P.
like my school, my church,
my shopping centres, and my
recreation centres can be
peaceful places. Wearing a
poppy reminds me that I
must be at peace with my
neighbours.
My country is made up of
communities. People of
every race rub elbows with
each other daily. Can I, as I
have daily contact ' with
people of my country show
by the way 1 live that I care
for them, love them and most
of all want to be at peace with
them? Kindness towards
them, politeness to them,
doing friendly deeds for
them are ways I can show
that I want peace for my
country. Wearing a poppy is
a sign that I want peace for
my country.
Our world is made up of
countries. Can I, in a world
as large as ours, do
something so that there will
be life and bright hope for a
future of peace. I can be a
friend to a child of another
nationality living in our
country. Many children in
the unfortunate countries
what would you do?" For
myself, I sure know what I'd
like to do, but what I should
do is entirely different. Some
of your own responses are-

Muriel MTh 9D - "dream all

Alice Vanderklippe 12K

need money for food,
clothing, towels, school
supplies and schooling. I
could also help sponsor a
needy child, in another
country.
Putting some of my
allowance towards these
needs would show love for
them and express a desire of
wanting to live at peace with
them.
A world like ours needs
people who are devoted to
their country and will make it
a better place to live by living
in peace now.
Wearing a poppy is a
peace reminder for me.
ANONYMITY OR FUN?
Why don't people write?
Every English room in our
school contains posters for
creative writing contests.
The prizes range from 500
dollars to free books the first
year of University. To the.
best of my knowledge, few
polite have entered any
ofthese contests since I've
been at school.
Perhaps fear is one of the
reasons why we don't. The
writer or' essayist or poet
likes to maintain anonymity.
(I know I do.) The thought of
everyone reading his work
sends shivers down his back.
Then, there is another
class of writer, the one who
thinks that his (or hers)
writing isn't good enough.
Good enough for what? You
should never judge your own
work because you will be too
critical.
Writing can be a lot of fun,
' if you let it. You can take a
character and make it do
whatever you want. It is a
great way to take out your
frustrations. Take, for
instance, someone you don't
like and put them in shark
invested waters, or, better
yet, come up with a new
torture. The characters are
puppets in your hands, you
control their destiny.
Ever had a special dream?
Try living it on paper some-
time, the results can be very
surprising.
Our school contains a lot of
talent. All we have to do is
find it.
