Daily we hear, or read, about snowmobile,
accidents. These vehicles are a useful mode
of transportation and the source of great
outdoor fun. Often their operators are quick
to use them to provide aid in ;emergencies.
They are also potentially dangerous if in
unskilled, careless or reckless harids. They
must be operated with care and alert caution
if serious, and fatal accidents are to be
avoided. If you are a snowmobiler be sure
you know how to operate your machine
safely. Take every precaution to escape
accidents.

The Lions Polar Daize activities over the
weekend went off as scheduled with most
events attracting a good number of entrants.
There were four hardy folk, who braved the
icy waters of the Maitland in the Polar Dip.
Believe it or not, two were young ladies. The
very thought of it makes me shudder. The
crowd of spectators who watched that event
Snow and ice make winter
driving hazardous; however;
they should not be regarded
as an excuse for an accident,
the Ontario Safety League
warns motorists.
Two of the main causes of
winter accidents are reduced
visibility and loss of traction.
The established saying of-
"don't be a peephole driver"
should be taken to heart.
How often have you failed to
adequately clear the snow
and ice from your windshield
or mirrors before starting
out? Be-fair to yourself and
others, clear your windshield
so hazards can be recognized
the moment you leave the
driveway or parking lot.
After your windshield is
clear, it is just as important
to keep it clear, Make certain
the heater-defroster is cap-
able of keeping the wind-
shield clear at all times.
Know your heater-defroster
and how to use it.
Other aids for adequate
visibility are good wiper
blades, and a scraper or'
brush. Check wiper. blades
and arm pressure frequently.
Even with new blades, wip-
ers may skip and stick if the
arm pressure is low.
When discussing winter
_hazards, poor traction is
another problem to be con-
sidered. a good set of snow
tires is essential.
Don't regard them as an
absolute cureall. Always re-
member to reduce your
speed.
Check mechanical equip-
ment. Make sure your brakes
grip evenly - unequal grip-
ping starts skids. Check tires
for uniform pressure. Avoid
over-inflation as well as
under-inflation exceeding
ten percent of the standard
pressure.
Get the feel of the road and
adjust your speed according.
Occasionally, try your brakes
or gently press the acceler-
ator while driving slowly
when traffic and road con-
ditions permit. If the wheels
slide or spin, adjust your
speed.
At slower speeds, the grip
between your tires and road
surface is increased. Expect
and the itig-of-war. and log sawing contest
urged the participants on and apparently
enjoyed the various events. The dance at the
B.M. & G, Centre Saturday night, the
proceeds of which goes to Community
Betterment, was well attended.

In watching Olympic. events,' I could not
help but wonder what urges young men, and
women, to be part in some of the ,highly,,
dangerous sports. The . huge event, for
instance, .riding down a steep, icy, sharp
curing course with a zig-zag at 85 miles or
more an hour. It certainly require§ expect
skill, complete concentration and instant
reflexes. It must be the same adventurous
spirit that impels others to climb almost
unavailable peaks, cress the Atlantic in a
balloon or sail around the world in a fragile
craft. For the thrill and the excitement of
accomplishment in the sport that entices
them they put their life on the line.

At time of writing (Election morning)
the results of ballating unknown, all the
pre-election whoop-la is over. No 'more
listening to idiotic--election advertising,
insults and name, calling on T.V. Now we can .
get back to watching programs of our choice;
read our daily paper without having well-
known political figures staring us in the face
along with a barage of re-hashed 'reports of
all their activities. After to-day all that will
be left for us to do is settle down to our daily
routine and watch what is going to happen to
Canada and Canadians.
