THE BRUSSELS POST, DECEMBER 12, 1979 13 Madill news.: Tell the world Opportunity of a lifetimel- have something to say, have some gripes about the school system, the prime minister; the way the kid across from you in the cafeteria eats her french-fries?--then grab the opportunity offered by the effective speaking clubs in F.E.M.S.S. Get it off your chest, tell the world! Or .maybe you have this chronic problem teachers sometimes refer to as verbal diarrhea- put that problem to work for you--write a speech! The Effective Speaking Club at .Madill aims to prepare students for voicing their opinions in public. Confidence in public speak- ing is certainly valuable when one is confronted with Recently, Mr. Wraith of the Guidance Department, took it upon himself to take a survey of drinking and smok- ing patterns of F.E. Madill students. The survey, which was completed by 342 stu- dents of Grades 9, 10, 11 and 12, was made up of the following questions: Does Mother smoke. . .Never Seldom? Less than 1 pack/ day? More than 1 pack/day? Does Father smoke. . .Never, seldom, etc. Do you smoke. .Never, seldom, etc. Does Mother drink. . .Never? On special occasions? Less than 1 drink/day? More than 1 drink/day? Does Father drink. . .Never? etc. Do you drink. . .Never? etc. From the survey, ' Mr. Wraith compiled the follow- ing statistics: Of the girls tested,' 64% never smoked, 21.2% sel- dom smoked, and 14.7% smoked less than 1 pack/day The boys showed a slightly higher percentage of smok- ers as 55.5% never smoked, 26.6% seldom smoked and 17.8% smoked less than one pack/day. For the drinking angle of the survey, the statistics showed 17.1% of the girls drinking never, 48.7% drink- ing on special occasions, 29.4% drinking less than 1 drink/day and 4.8% drinking more than one drink/day. Similarly, the boys created the following numbers: 15.3% never-, 38.9% on special occasions, 31.2% less than 1 drink/day, 13.4% more than 1 drink/day. An interesting correlation was also discovered between the results of parental drink- ing/smoking habits and those of their children. It was found that through grades 9 to 11, the afore mentioned patterns of the parents were exactly duplicated by the student in almost every case. For example, a female stu- dent having a mother who drank only on special occa- sions would also drink only "What are your feelings on the Iranian situation?" "I would not start a war over it."-Debbie McNichol 10E. "I believe that the world has more important issues to worry about than a deposed Shah. It is a problem be- tween the US and Iran and all other forces should stay out of it."-Susan Chapman 13A "Let the Americans rectify the situation and keep Can- ada out of it. We'd be like fleas trying to help a dog." -Stephen Pritchard 13C "Their turbans are wound too tight."-Anonymous "No comment. "-Debbie Armstrong 12A there are two categories, one for boys and one for the girls. And success is not so uncom- mon. Last year Mary Lou Anne Clare progressed all. the way to the Ontario-Que- bec finals, placing very well there (and winning $300 in the process). For grades 10 and 11 students, the Independant Order of Oddfellovvs 'and Rebeccas hold a contest in March for Huron County high schools, for which the prize is an all expense paid trip to New York city (travel- ling with other guys and girls your age). F.E. has recorded success in this contest as well and the winner for the past two years has been Mustang. (Speaking from experience, on special occasions. By grade 12 however, the influ- ence of parents apparently has lessened as the students now have jumped to a new category; in -almost every case, the student now drinks or smokes more than the parent.. The results of this survey proved to be very worthwhile and thanks are owed to Mr. Wraith and al1his volunteers who compiled the statistics. As well, many thanks to the Physical Education Depart- ment who looked after hav- ing the surveys completed, and to the 342 students who filled out the surveys. -Kathy UnderWood "I think Jimmy Carter should send the Shah back to Iran because otherwise there will be World War III." -Paul- ine McLellan 11E "I agree with Pauline." -Paul Nichol 11F the effort going into making a speech is well worth it-the trip is a riot).
