At HOME! ilh Brussels Post Post Pius Ls ONTMU0 4 — THE BRUSSELS POST, DECEMBER 5, 1979 Exams just over at Madill For those of you who don't know, we, the students of F.E., have just finished writ- ing our exams. In order to better acquaint you with what we go through, I will lay out a few of the steps we must follow. At least 2 weeks before (usually 2 days before): 1. Copy down the exam schedule. 2. Check the exam schedule. Check it with the major schedule posted in the hall. Check it with the schedule posted in the class room. Check it with friends. Check it with enemies. Check it with last year's students Check it. Make sure it is right. 3. Report all conflicts. Pick up your conflict schedule. This means, for all the lucky people who don't know, if you are scheduled to write Phys. Ed and Auto at the same time on the same day, report it. I f however, that is Chemistry and Biology--for- get it! 4. Study--before hand, dur- ing hand, after hand, any hand! This of course, must be fitted in with those pre- exam rituals--things that cannot be done during exams for lack of time--e.g. washing hair, polishing shoes, shav- ing legs, weight training. The day of the exam: 1. Upon arriving in the school, make haste to rid yourself of all unnecessary burdens in your locker and hurriedly shuffle to the room of your choice. 2. Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait for the presiding teacher to unlock the door. This waiting time is handy for casually sliding oneself clos- er to the door. 3. When the door is open, charge. Scream, nudge, el- bow, charge maul if neces- sary but GET IN THAT ROOM! Once in the room, run to the desk of your choice and slam your books upon it. 4. Sit and study. Do not talk. 5. Write, print, scribble, scrawl, scratch. Well, as you can see, for apparent reasons we are very happy to be finished exams. We now have a few months in order to build up enough strength to re-go-through this ritual in March. Alice Vander Klippe IN MY OPINION The recent train crash in Mississauga started me thinking about the backward society in which we live. The cost of this episode has not yet been determined and the actual price may never be found. But, the really BIG news is that there will be a public enquiry into the mis- hap. So what? After the enquiry there will be a rash of new rules and regulations. Safety standards will be set and enforced--for a while--until the whole thing has died down. Then, gradually, rules will become lax and inspec- tors won't analyze carefully. It will only be a matter of time before there is another derailment--only the next one may involve loss of life. I know there are always going to be accidents; they are unavoidable, But, isn't it time that we enforce the standards before an ac- cident occurs instead of after it happens? Remember the bus crashes in Quebec? This led to all school buses being inspected and certified. Our buses have nice, neat, little red and yellow stickers proving they have been inspected and are considered "safe." This was a very good idea, as thous- ands of children ride on buses every school day. My complaint is that it took a bad accident before the govern- ment decided to do some- thing to prevent another one. Shouldn't buses have been checked on a regular basis before that time? I realize that it would cost a lot of money to check all buses, but, who can place a price on a life? I think the government should follow its own advice-- we've got it, let's use it.
