until9 Brussels
needed was eight children per day, Rev.
Sargent again explained that the playschool
was for pre-school education and to provide
mothers with some time to themselves.
"The primary reason is not the baby-
sitting service and the teachers aren't in it
for the money. The teachers have been
drawing a salary of $20 per week.
"The reason I looked around and asked if
anyone was interested in teaching was not
the babysitting service, but the pre-
education aspect of it," Rev. Sateint
explained.
"I don't think anyone realizes how
important this is. They (the children) are
entering into a system that makes a lot more
demands of them than were ever made of
you and I," he said.
The school is trying to provide basic
learning skills such as counting, alphabet,
and identification of different shapes and
colors, he said.
"The other aspect is the social learning
skills, helping children learn to adjust to
other children." It's very important for the
first child, because they don't have social
learning with other children in the ;family.
Studies show there's a marked difference
between children who had good pre-school
training and those who haven't," he said.

FIED Parents of pre-schoolers indicated their
commitment to the playschool in Brussels at
a special meeting held Monday night with
Rev. Dan Sargent, chairman of the Board of
Directors and the three teachers Mrs.
Colleen Rice, Mrs. Jane McDonald and Mrs.
Lynn Rowe.
The playschool had recently come under
fire from Provincial officials for not having a
teacher who holds a primary teaching
certificate. Rev. Sargent explained that the
basic purpose of the meeting was to get an
idea of the commitment to the playschool to
decide whether it was worthwhile going
ahead with it. He said that the one
qualification which they don't have is a
primary certificate. He added that Jane
McDonald who has taught public school had
indicated a willingness to investigate the
possibility of getting that certificate.
Rev. Sargent indicated the board was
willing to fight the govenrment on this one
point, "because we firmly believe we are
giving as good a pre-school education as
we would if we had the certificate".
He pointed out the play school is not
asking for grants or government loans, but
simply asking the govenrment, "to allow us
to do what we are committed to do and not
get a hassle in the process."
