Cream butter and sugar until fluffy. Add remaining ingredients except cherries, mixing well with hands. Flatten a small bit of dough, about a teaspoon for each cookie in palm of hand. Place a candied cherry on circle of dough. Cover cherry by pinching dough up and around it and roll between palms of hands to smooth. Place on greased cookie sheet and bake in mod- erately slow oven 325° about 35 minutes. While still hot roll in fine granulated sugar.
