DONATIONS — The Brussels Optimists presented donations to, various
organizations at their meeting on Monday night. Don Bray (left) and
Gerry Wheeler (far right) of the Optimists presented Jackie Workman
and Gary McCutcheon of the Leos with $400, and Shirley Wheeler with
$200 for the Figure Skating Club. The Optimists also donated $200
toward minor hockey. (Photo by Langlois)
WHAT WAS THAT? — People must have had quite a
surprise on Saturday when Greg Cowan towed a boat through town. The
boat, which he and Trudy Cowan constructed themselves, was being
moved to Goderich harbor to launch and from there Greg planned to
proceed north to Thunder Bay. The Cowans built the boat with the hope
of someday sailing around the world. Mr. Cowan called the Post
Tuesday to say "the boat floats!" (Photo by Langlois)
THE BRUSSELS POST OCTOBER 31, 1979 — 3
Special classes at St. John's
St. John's Anglican
Church is having a lot of
activities this fall.
Children and adults, about
fifty in all, had been
attending a six-week series
of classes in preparation for
Christian Initiation on
October 21. The children
received their first com-
munion at the morning ser-
vice, and in the evening
Bishop Parke-Taylor,
Sufferagan of Huron
Diocese, confirmed ten adult
members, while thirteen
members reaffirmed their
confirmation vows. This was
also a communion service.
Bishop Parke-Taylor spoke to
us about "Discipleship".
The Sunday School
children received their at-
tendance pins, a bar for the
year, on October 28 of the
45 children who attend, well
over half qualified for
awards,
The children and parents
also enjoyed a Halloween
party on Friday, October 26.
People came dressed as
Biblical characters to remind
us that Hallowe'en really
means "Holy Covering"
The children made "Happy
Face" flowers and later went
to the Nursing Home and
the Senior Citizens to give
them to the residents, who
much appreciated them.
The Youth Club held its
first meeting on the evening
of October 25. The pre-
schoolers continue to enjoy
the Playschool three
mornings a week, with an
average attendance of 14.
They have a program of free
play, story time, a snack,
outdoor play if the weather is
good, singing exercises and
crafts, which at present
centre on a Hallowe'en
theme.
Several of the adult
members plan to attend the
Anglican Cursillo in London
in November and December
"Cursillo" is a spanish word
meaning a short course in
Christianity.

trial has been in favour of the idea that
Steven Truscott was innocent, it has also
been that the town itself was somehow
guilty of something. The various books
have cast doubt on the local medical
authorities, the jurors, local police officials,
everyone in any way connected with the
case. Books such as the new Trent book
seem to hint that there is a conspiracy, that
there is even fear in the community, that
people know who really did the murder but
want to pin in on the boy.
The irony of it all is that 99 per cent of
the population had probably never even
heard of either Steven Truscott or Lynne
Harper before the murder. They lived in
that other world at the air base south of
town, a separate town with its own

governmental red tape re-

BY REV. DAN SARGENT
The Brussels Nursery-Play
School has been operating
for a month now, and we are
pleased with its professional
and responsible approach to
pre-school training.
As you may already know,
the Play School was designed
to provide two basic services.
Our primary purpose is to
provide valuable pre-school
training for the children, and
the secondary purpose is to
provide opportunity for
mothers to have a break from
the daily demands of a
pre-school child.
The initial response to the
School has been encouraging
but we are now looking for an
increased use of the service
by the community in order to
keep it viable.
I can understand a lack of
interest and use of the
service if its only purpose
was to provide a cheap
baby-sitting service. This
would account for the limited
attendance at the moment.
What does concern me
however, is that perhaps
some parents have not
understood the very real
importance pre-school train-
ing has for their child's
future development. I cannot
overstress that this is the
primary purpose for the
foundation of the Play School
in Brussels.
Every parent, I'm sure,
tries to provide their children
with good pre school training
in such bask learning skills
as: counting, shape and
colour identification, speech
ete. But for various reasons
such as limited time, and
energy, we as parents fail to
adequately equip our child-
ren for the demands placed
on them by the public school
system. Consequently, many
children find themselves be-
hind other children even at
the kindergarten level, and
many are never able to catch
up. The deficiencies of their
pre-school training tend to
follow them throughout their
formal education.
We at the Brussels Nurs-
ery Play School, are attempt-
ing to provide the children
with the best pre-school
education we can. Then
consider the social develop-
ment skills we are trying to
provide them with as well.
Learning to deal with other
people, to co-operate, and
communicate, and to learn
the basic social skills we all
need in order to cope in our
complex society.
Both the educational, and
social development of the
child is the principle object-
ive of the Nursery School
program.
I sincerely hope every
parent will consider very
carefully this plea. I can say
with confielen:e that any
child enrolled in the program
will benefit from it.
We do realize that getting
the little ones to and from the
School can sometimes make
it seem more bother than it's
worth. But I think you will
find the results well worth
the effort.
I also want to thank the
Brussels Lions Club for their
financial support in getting
the supplies and equipment
We needed to begin oper-
ation.

housing, recreational facilities and even its
own school. The murder didn't take place
in the town either but in the country
between the base and the town. The
provincial police were involved in the
investigation not the local police. The town
of Clinton was hardly involved at all and
yet it has carried the stigma for the last 20
years.
The supreme irony for the last decade
has been that the Truscotts, the Harpers
and all the other air force personnel are
now gone. The old air base is now turned to
other uses. The people most involved in the
case are no longer there. But it's the
people of Clinton who still suffer. Pardon
them if they want to forget Steven
Truscott.
