Storing beets
Vegetables are good for
you. They should be included
in every day menues. Beets
are a colorful and tasty
vegetable in plentiful supply.
Choose clean, firm, smooth
ones without cracks or blem-
ishes. To store at home leave
a two or three inch stem and
roots attached. Store in cool,
moist place, or in refriger-
ator. Leave skins on to boil
beets, also a one inch stem
and roots. This prevents
beets from bleeding while
cooking. Cook covered in
boiling water. Small beets 14
to 18 minutes, the larger the
beets, the longer the time.
Serve whole, diced or sliced,
season with butter, salt and
pepper or add a sour cream
or Harvard dressing.

Ethel Brown is Posts correspondent 20_ Trig BRUSSELS POST, OCTOBER 17, 1979
CLASSIFIED they were still taking a local
paper,
Mrs. Brown gets her news
in a variety of ways. Some
people phone her up and tell
her the news. She knows
another lady who phones a
few people for her, then tells
Mrs. Brown their news.
"When they don't phone,
you just phone somebody up
and ask them if they've had
any visitors in their area,"
Mrs. Brown said.

Correction
Last week in a picture of
the draws being made at
Oldfield's Pro Hardware
Store, we had the right bank
but the wrong man. John
Sims was incorrectly
identified as Jerry Dillow in
the outline. The Brussels

4-H, and the Institutes get
their news into the paper
either through Mrs. Brown
or by reporting it to the
papers themselves.
Writing the news is
nothing new to Mrs. Brown.
She's been the Listowel
Banner's Gorrie correspon-
dent since the spring of 1948
and she's been performing
the same task for the
Wingham paper since 1961.
Mrs. Brown became a
correspondent when Mrs.
Victor Shera, a neighbour
who had been doing the work
was moving away and asked
Mrs. Brown to become the
Gorrie correspondent for the
Listowel paper. The late
Mrs. Norman Wade was
writing the Gorrie news for
the Wingham paper, and she
and Mrs. Brown used to work
together. Upon Mrs. Wade's
retirement, Wingham
Advance-Times publisher
Barry Wenger asked Mrs.
Brown to write for the
Wingham paper.
In 1961 she also started
writing some news for the
London Free Press and the
Kitchener-Waterloo Record,
reporting on things like fires
and elections in the Gorrie
area.
(Continued front Page 1)
watched them grow up,
"I was just interested in
people," Mrs. Brown says
and points out that the
weekly newspaper is like a
letter from home for the one
who moves away.
As an example of this, she
said that in 1949, she and her
husband had visited Mrs.
Tom Edgar, a former Gorrie
resident and although the
Edgars had moved away
from Gorrie long before then,
