THE BRUSSELS POST, OCTOBER 17, 1979 — 5
Is there a better way to spend a weekend?
Address

Picture this. It is a Friday
night. Sue and Ben Brown
are having a party. Their
parents are gone for the
weekend. The crowd is
laughing and talking. Empty
beer bottles and various
other bottles are spread
about the house. Loud music
blairs from the stereo. Ash-
trays are full; the air is thick
with smoke, A pretty red-
head gig ales hilariously. A'
few couples are dancing.
Someone trips; she winces,
then laugh s. Others help her
to the couch; her ankle is
is sprained. It a big joke to all
present. The smoking and
drinking and music continues
Someone is throwing up in
the bathroom. The night
wears on.
This is how many a Friday
or Saturday night is spent'lly
the young people of our time.
Strangely enough, the next
morning, they reminisce,
with headaches and nausea,
for the whole
farm family
about the wonderful time last
night. All were drunk; half
had to throw up; someone
was hurt, but they all had a
great time. Really? Did they
honestly have a good time?
What is it that makes alcohol
so popular anyway?
Perhaps it is the taste,
although I doubt it. Perhaps
it gives one an escape from
problems. Or maybe there is
some sort of bliss in being
ignorant of what you are
doing or saying. But then it
could be the fact that if you
just have orange crush, you
are a "square", and totally
out of it; whereas, a beer or
rye or whatever makes you
part of the crowd. It is your
membership card to good
times. As long as you're
drinking, you feel grown-up
and glamourous and great.
Perhaps the most widely
used reason is that it ensures
a good time. What I fail to
understand is why we need

alcohol to have a great time,
The effects felt the next
morning do not appear as a
lot of fun to me. Hitting
another car on the road,
because I cannot see, straight
does not sound too great.
Prospects of addiction or
alcoholism do not seem
enjoyable, The negative side
far overpowers the positive
side of drinking. We do not
need alcohol to enjoy our-
selves. Let's face it. Are we
willing to face consequences,
whatever they may be, just
for a good time? Surely there

ance of handicapped people.

when I walked down the
street I was subjected to the

I saw a picture the other
day of a youth; his face was
firmly set, his eyes glared
- belligerently and his arms
were grasp ing a ladder.
What caught my attention
was that he had no legs. The
capation stated that he work-
ed in a circus as an acrobat
proving his ability to move
about without legs. I was
astounded as a read on about
a midget who also worked as
part of the show. The insens-
itivity of our human race
seems to know no bounds.
We as a society pride
ourselves on our equality.
But are we really equal?
Throughout the ages, the
physically handicapped and
deformed have suffered the
bizzare cruelties of man.
Though not so much today a
rt certain prejudice remains
and as a society we have
singled out the handicapped.
Are not they the ones who
are crippled? Are not they
the ones who have difficulty
getting jobs? Are not they
the ones who should be in
institutions? We tend to view
"them" as a separate part of
society, things to be stared at
and not to be considered as
normal, emotionally sen-
sitive human beings.
