MRS. JOE WALKER
, 357-3558
The necessary task of
grocery shopping was the
theme of a talk given by Mrs..
Eve Payne when Mrs. Bert
Garniss opened her home for
the meeting of the Bluevale
Women's Institute. "Super-
market Temptations" was
the title of her talk and she
defined the task as," a
complex game, a tug of war
between our will power and
the supermarket's ex-
pertise".
Mrs. Payne spoke of the
many encouragements the
shopper encounters for
spending money. Aisles are
arranged to encourage a flow
of traffic through the entire
store, thus exposing
shoppers to more goods.
Carts have flip-seats for the
toddler who may influence a
shopper's choice. End-aisle
displays offer new and high
profit items and are ne-
gotiated for at great cost by
the wholesalers. Super-
markets have been charged
and found .guilty of false
advertising.
The speaker told members
that the secret of successful
shopping is to go with a
detailed list, don't meander
up and down the aisles, spot
a genuinely good buy, use
the store specials and don't
shop when hungry. She
closed her talk with words
written by Marjorie Holmes,'
a prayer asking for
judgement to choose wisely
and expressing humble
gratitude to God for money,
be it much or little, to be able
to buy the necessities of life.
Mrs. Charles Mathers,
president, opened the
meeting by reading two
poems.-Mrs. Payne and her
partner, Mrs. Jack
Nicholson, who are con-
veners of the Family and
Consumer Affairs
committee, were in charge of
the program. The roll call, 'a
tip on beating the high cost
of living', was answered by
13 members and three
visitors.
Mrs. Nicholson read a
poem, "Saints and Sinners,"
and gave several short
humorous readings. Interest
was shown in the short
course, "Indoor
Gardening", and Mrs. Edna
MacTavish and Mrs. Marie
de Vos volunteered to attend
the two-day workshop in
Wingham.
Mrs. Mathers and Mrs.
Carl Johnston - were ap-
pointed delegates to the
Huron County rally on Oct. 1.
The Bluevale Institute
members will be visiting
Huronview to entertain the
residents and celebrate with
those having birthdays in
November.
Cake and ice cream were
served by the hostess, Mrs.
W.J. Peacock, Mrs. Mel
Craig and Mrs. Gordon Holt.
