COMPACT STORAGE This sliding door
cupboard, built in beside the refrigerator, was
designed as a compact storage unit for canned
goods and baking supplies, and slides in and
out of the wall with ease in the Agar's Kitchen.
NEW KITCHEN IN OLD HOME Mary
Douma shows the new cupboards she and her
husband added to their R.R.4, Brussels farm
house. The Doumas also insulated the house
and renovated the living room and bathroom.
The couple plans to redo the upstairs and
outside of the house as well.
Brussels couple renovates
BY DEBBIE RANNEY
More and more people are
trying to improve on their
homes these days and
Maurice and Mary Douma of
R.R. 4, Brussels are no
exception.
They've made a number of
renovations to their farm-
house which they purchased
in April and moved into in
July. The major improve-
ments they made were in the
kitchen and living room but
there were also improve-
ments made to the laundry
and bathroom. Working on
all these rooms included
-taking all the walls off,
insulating, rewiring, dry
walling and repainting. The
Doumas only needed to do
this to one wall in the
bathroom.
Other improvements in-
eluded a new wider kitchen
window and a new front
livingroom window. The
Doumas also had to change
where a register was located
in the kitchen so they could
put in all new cupboards.
When they went to 'put
insulation in their livingroom
wall the Doumas had a
problem. The wall was
double bricked. A represent-
ative of a building company
suggested putting 2x4's over
the existing walls and put-
ting insulaton between. This
gave her really wide window
sills, Mrs. Douma said.
New floor coverings were
put in the living room and
kitchen.
When the Doumas moved
into the house it had been
empty for three years so
required some updating and
the Doumas fixed some of
the roof because some
. shingles were missing and
also planted some new lawn
outside the house.
Although they've made
many improvements to the
house, the Doumas aren't
finished yet. They wan; to
take the porch off and make a
sundeck and Mrs. Doutna
said the whole upstairs needs
doing. They want to insulate,
rewire and re-drywall most of
it as well as redecorate.
The Doumas had a con-
tractor put in the new
windows in their house. A
friend 'did the wiring, Mrs.
Douma's father did the
plumbing and the Doumas
did the painting and drywal-
ling themselves with some
help once more from her
father.
