— THE 'BRUSSELS POST, SEPTEMBER 19,
Pro-Life meets
Wingham Pro-Life group
met at the Wingham Bible
Chapel, September 10.
A Birthright organization
is set up in the Wingham
area. Birthright is a pro-life
philosophy to offer help and
advice to pregnant and dis-
tressed women and girls.
Services which can be pro-
vided include a pregnancy
test, financial help, a place to
stay, assistance in finding a WaY."
doctor, professional, medical
or legal advice, clothing etc.
or just someone to talk to.
Local Birthright contacts
are: Mrs. Herman (Cory) De
Bruyn, R.R. 3, Wingham,
357-1769; Mrs. George
Frances) King, Teeswater,

(Trudy) McDonald, R.R. 3,
Wingham, 357-1676.
The Alliance for Life, the
national co-ordinating body
for pro-life education groups
in Canada l had its annual
meeting in Vancouver, B.C.
at the end of June. The
meeting resulted in the elect-
ion of the 1979-80 Board of
Directors and the passing of
a Position and Policy Paper
dealing with several life
issues.
More than 75 delegates,
representing Pro-Life Groups
across Canada unanimously
adopted the Position Paper,
which—
"Condemns all abortion
(except that which occurs as
a result of a life-saving
medical treatment of the
Mother) as a direct attack on
the life of an unborn human
being."
The paper also expresses
the alliance position on . sev-
eral other issues including
Newsprint shortage
the latest medical experi-
mentation called "In Vitro
Fertilization or Test-Tube
Baby."
"Until the medical, ethical
and moral aspects can be
clarified, it would be much
preferable to see research
develop to correct all defects
in the 'reproduction system,
thereby allowing fertilization
to take place in a natural
The paper also expresses
opposition to abortion-
producing methods of birth-
control including the I.U.D.
and the so-called morning
after pill.
General counselling and
screening probing the womb
by such procedures as amni-
ocentesis was noted as
becoming more common and
although the Alliance for Life
recognizes the validity of
such procedures in some
instances, "It is completely
opposed to their use as a
justification,for abortion."
The meeting was held in
conjunction with "The Child
in His World" a three-day
seminar held at the Univer-
sity of B.C. Campus, spon-
sored by the Pro-Life Society
of British Columbia. At the
closing of the banquet on
Saturday evening the Will-
iam Kurelek Award was
presented to Dr. Balfour
Mount of Montreal in recog-
nition of his years of service
in the care of the dying.
Wingham pro-life float
won first prize in the Centen-
nial parade of Wingham.
A nation-wide walkathon
will be held September 29.
The Wingham pro-life group
will walk on that, day.
John Eakins, M.P.P.
(Victorii-Haliburton) says"I
understand that everyone is
suffering a shortage of news-
print at the moment, but
because the amount required
by the Ontario weeklies is so
minimal relative to that
supplied to the major U.S.
buyers, I feel that a diversion
of 1,500 tons of newsprint to
the Ontario weekly news-
papers is reasonable and
necessary. These are small
inde pendent papers which
could face serious financial
problems if their supply of
newsprint is cut off. They
have little or no inventory at
the moment, while the major
U.S. buyers still have about
20 days inventory on hand,
even with the shortages.
"I would w; k the major
Ontario newsprint suppliers
to reconsider their position
and to make this realtively
small additional amount of
newsprint available to the
Ontario weeklies. It could be
crucial to their survival."
The weekly newspapers in
Ontario are facing a serious
shortage of newsprint for at
least the rest of this year.
According to the Ontario
Weekly Newspaper As-
sociation an additional
1,500 tons is required over
and above The amount the
major newsprint suppliers
have agreed to provide. If the
major suppliers diverted a
mere 11/2 days of production
from their shipments to the
U.S. the shortfall to Ontario
weeklies could be averted.
