Two of the four Huron
County 4-H calf club
members who competed in
the annual 4-H Silver Dollar
Competition at the Erin
fairgrounds on the weekend
placed in the top third of
showing competitors.
Chris Meier of Brussels
scored 810 points in the
competition, the top score for
a local competitor , and
Mary Ann Van Dorp of
Seaforth scored 801 points.
The overall dairy calf
competition was won by Brad
Fraser of Peel County who
scored 873 points.
The reserve champion was
Robert Shuh of the Elmira
area, Waterloo County.
The third Huron County
dairy calf competitor was
Trent Foerter of Clifford who
scored 753 points.
The senior level 4-H calf
club members who
represented their counties in
the third annual competition
were selected earlier this
year.
The show, sponsored by
United Breeders of Guelph,
is unique because it
emphasizes the competitor
more than the calf. Each
4-H'er writes an essay. and
answers a senior level quiz,
then receives points in the
showing for showmanship
ability and finally for the
calf.
Terri Smith of Walton was
the Huron County
representative in the beef
calf competition, and she
scored 775 points.
The beef calf competition
was won by Cheryl McArthur
of Stayner and Brian
Montgomery of Shelburne,
who tied for first place with
878 points.
! Second place was won by
Kevin Brown of Waterloo
County, and third by Nancy
Noeeker of Moorefield, in
Wellington County.
The champion competitor
in each class received 75
silver dollars on a silver tray.
Until last year, the Silver
Dollar competition was
limited to dairy calf club
members. Because of the
popularity of the
- competition, it was necessary
to limit the number of
entrants per county to five,
and allow them only two
years participation.
The 4-H Beef Silver Dollar
Competition is in its second
year, the result of demands
for a senior level show based
on a beef heifer calf project.
All other top level beef shows
are based on a steer calf
project which ends when the
steer goes to market. The
heifer calf has the advantage
that the 4-Her can keep her
to form the nucleus of a
future herd.
This year, 34 beef calves
were entered in the
competition and 59 dairy
calves.
The shows were held at the
Erin Fairgrounds on Sunday.
