This is the best
time to rejuvenate weak,
patchy lawns, says Burke
McNeill, Ontario Ministry of
Agriculture and Food exten-
sion horticulturist.
"Cool fall weather stimu-
lates grass growth, and seed-
ings will have time to estab-
lish good root systems before
winter," he says.
Lawn deterioration can be
caused by poor soil, poor
drainage, excessive shade,
weeds, pests, or improper
maintenance.
Poor lawns can be revital-
ized with adequate watering
or improved soil fertility and
condition.
If lawns have few bare
spots, and the topsoil is
good, a complete reseeding
is unnecessary, says Mr.
McNeil. To avoid waste,
reseed only the bare spots
that are more than 78 cm
square (1 square foot).
Apply a good herbicide
before spreading the seed.
Thin lawns require a top-
dressing to provide a suitable
seedbed.
"Prepare lawns for com-
plete reseeding by removing
all dead and-cut vegetation,"
suggests Mr. McNeill,
"Apply a herbicide at recom-
mended rates to kill remain-
ing turf."
This treatment will 'burn
off' the vegetation without
leaving harmful residues,
When the turf grass is dead,
cultivate the top 5 cm (2
inches) of soil, rake lawn
surfaces, and sow the seed.
For best results, seed by
mid September with a good
grass mixture, such as creep-
ing fetcue and Kentucky
bluegrass.
