IT'S TAFFY'S TURN β€” The Brussels fall fair will be new to Janet McIntosh's horse Taffy as she just got the horse recently but it won't be new to Janet who comes from R.R.5, Brussels as she won a prize in the saddle parade class last year. )Brussels Post Photo) Stephen and Sheila GUIUtzen of R.R.2, Brussels have been entering their beef calves in the fair for a few years now and this year is no exception . Enrolment up at Brussels PS September is here and the children are back in school. This year, declining enrol- ment doesn't seem to be a problem at the Brussels Public School as 29 pupils are enrolled in Kindergarten compared with 22 that started in Kindergarten in September last year. Total enrolment at the Brussels. Public School is approximately 250 students compared with a total of 248 in September of last year and 253 in June. No figures for enrolment at Grey Central School in Ethel were available at press time on Tuesday. At the Walton Public School which encompasses Kindergarten to Grade 3 both It's almost time for the Brussels fair and: everywhere people are busy canning, crocheting or getting livestock ready for this annual event. Brussels and area people seem to have a spirit of participation, and it doesn't stop when it comes to the village fair either. In this photo feature, the Post tried to capture some of the hard work and effort people take when`getting ready for the fair. Mrs. Gerald Miller of R. R. #3, Brussels was a big winner especially in the baking classes at the fair last year. She won three firsts, one second, one third and was also a winner in the special classes for apple pie, tarts, and the best layer cake. Mrs. Miller first started entering things in the fair in 1977 after she noticed how slim the entries were in 1976 and she won quite a few prizes. Last year she put in sewing, knitting' and baking and was successful at again capturing some prizes. This year she was going to enter some nine-day pickles, peaches and probably tomatoes along with the usual pies, cakes and muffins which she' usually makes the morning of fair day. She finds the challenge of baking for the fair interesting, "especially if you're compe- fing against women who have been cooking longer than you have," she said. Mrs. Miller may also enter some type of sewing if she can find time to do it before the fair starts. Mrs. Eldon Wilson of R. R. #3, Brussels seems to have had lots of time to do her sewing for the fair. In fact she started her crafts way back in January but hadn't yet finished everything she wanted to do for the fair at the time of the interview. She still had an afghan and an apron to complete. This is the fourth year Mrs. Wilson has entered her' things in the fair and last year it paid off in a big way. She got eight firsts, eight seconds, and four thirds in the Horn Crafts Section. Mrs. Wilson has topped the ladies division for the last two years and she says "I'm hoping I can top it for the third year, then quit." She will have about 25 things entered in the fair this year including ladies'sweaters, a lady's shawl, a lady's stole, slippers, children's sweaters, cushions, pillow slips, a teapot cozy, touque and mitts, baby outfits, and baby dresses, After entering the crafts in the fair she usually sells them or gives them away as ,the Kindergarten enrolment and total enrol- ment at the school are down slightly. There are approximately 20 pupils enrolled in Kindergarten this year as compared with about 32 last year and there is a total enrolment this year of ap- proximately 106 compared to about 118 pupils last year. Enrolment at the East Wawanosh Public School in Belgrave has gone up slightly since the end of June. Total enrolment at the end of June was 171 and currently the total enrolment is 177. Kindergarten enrolment at the end of June was 19 and currently there are 20 pupils enrolled this year. gifts. However, she originally makes the items with the fair in mind. She said she keeps saying it's going to be ner last year but, "I enjoy the work very much. I'm interested in crocheting and crafts." Janet McIntosh won a prize in the parade class for saddle horse last year and she plans to enter her new horse Taffy this year. She said judges looks for how the horse (Continued on Page 3 ) Short Shots by Evelyn Kennedy Calling Young Girls: Would you like to be a Brownie? Remember the change in time. ****** Forty-seven people took advantage of the Brussels Horticultural Society sponsored bus trip to Huron Country Playhouse, Grand Bend, to attend a performance of "Sound of Music". It was a production that was certain to be throughtly enjoyed by all. The talented local area children, chosen as members of the cast, well deserved the outbursts of applause for their fine performances)as did the entire cast the standing ovation they received at the close. Did you ever travell by bus with forty six talkative ladies and one lone man? His voice was seldom heard amid the clatter of female tongues that made the bus sound like an aviary of raucous jays. The lateness of the return journey home and the fog encountered quietened things down. * * * * * * The death of the Earl Mountbatten was a dreadful tragedy that should never have happened.
