Well kids, summer's
almost over and school will
be starting soon'. But before
you start thinking about
school, let's just think about
what's happened this sum-
mer.
At the Authority, 22 sum-
mer students were hired. Of
these 22 students, 11 became
known as the "field crew."
This means that they did the
manual labour required dur-
ing the summer months.
You will appreciate their
hard work the next time you
visit one of our conservation
areas. If you go camping at
Falls Reserve at Benmiller,
your firewood was hand cut
or chainsawed, and trans-
ported by the field crew.
While you're at Falls Re-
serve, if you want to take in a
little fishing, you should
notice the shade rafts on the
ponds. These provide shelter
and shade for the fish and
were also built by the field
crew. The field crew is also
responsible for the freshly
OFA meet
will focus on
challenges
This year, the Ontario
Federation of Agriculture
convention will focus on the
theme "Challenge in the
80's." The convention will
move from Hamilton, to the
Downtown Holiday Inn,
Toronto, where it will be held
from Nov. 26 to 29.
Some of the topics which
will be discussed include
Energy in the 1980's, the
politics of agriculture,
capitalization for the 80's and
the quality of life.
Delegates attending from
Huron County will be elected
at the annual regional
meetings held on Sept. 6.
The meeting for West
Central Huron and South
Huron will be held at Huron
Centennial School, Bruce-
field, for me .mbers from
townships from Hwy. #8
south.
The meeting for North
East Huron, North West
Huron and East Central
Huron will be held at East
Wawanosh School, Belgrave.
In addition to the election
of convention delegates and
regional directors, a speaker
will present an update of the
corn marketing proposals.
Smiles
The biggest stride toward
safety in modern traffic is
being made by the pedes-
trian with the longest legs.

painted parking barriers and
new steps leading from the
lower campground, to the
upper one.
I'm sure that many of you
have enjoyed a pleasant
swim at Bluevale Dam. If you
have, you can thank the field
crew for the new diving dock,
freshly painted signs and
change rooms, and general
landscaping of the area.
During the winter months,
the maple syrup demon-
stration will be operating
again at Maple Keys Conser-
vation Area. This includes
the entire process from the
tapping of the trees to the
actual making of maple
syrup. This year, changes
have been made to accom-
odate more people. The field
crew cleared brush for the
development of a parking lot.
They've also made a board-
walk and a rail fence leading
from the parking lot to the
start of the nature trail.
Many of their jobs are
varied and range from the
raking, seeding, and cover-
ing with mulch of a large
gully to the building of a
float. They are also respon-
sible for cutting brush at
Wawanosh Conservation
Area and for putting sealer
on the Conservation Author-
ity's headquarters' drive-
way.
The most recent work pro-
ject is being carried out at
Harriston where erosion con-
trol measures are being
implemented along the
stream banks.
Of course it's not all work
and no play. The crew re-
ceived instructions on the
use of chainsaws from the
Authority staff and fire
extinguishers and fire haz-
ards from the Wingham Fire
Chief Dave Crothers.
They've also visited Doan
Pioneer Village and Grand
River Conservation Authority
on an education day. A
course in emergency first-aid
was also given by the St.
John's Ambulance.
Next summer, if you're a
student who's 16 years or
older and you want interest-
ing outside work, apply at
Maitland Valley Conser-
vation Authority, Box 5,
Wroxeter, or phone 335-3557
This is Rocky signing off
and hoping to see you then.
