Warm summer days bring longings for
some different forms of recreational
activity. With that thought in mind, the
Brussels Post set out to explore some of the
Conservation areas around Brussels.
The areas owned by the Maitland Valley
Conservation Authority (MVCA) around
here include the Brussels Conservation
Area, the Ethel Conservation Area, the
Sunshine Conservation Area in Morris
Township, the Pioneer Conservation Area
in Bluevale, the Maple Keys Sugar Bush in
Grey Township, the Morris Hill Forest
Tract in Morris Township and the Pollard-
Ament Tract in Morris Township.
The Brussels Conservation area is
classed as a day use area and is used for
canoeing and limited fishing and it has a
couple of picnic tables. Possibly in the
'future a small picnic shelter may be
erected there by the Authority.
Dan Grummett, lands technician with the
Maitland Valley Conservation Authority
(MVCA) also cited the historic aspects of the
old mill at the conservation area.
Mr. Grummett said the Authority is
interested in rehabilitating either the

say each year that they hope the tournament
will be run again. The winning team gets
$150, the B champions get $100, the A
runner-up gets $75. and the B runner-up
gets $50. The A and B champions also win
trophies. And the different businesses in the
village donate $5 for anybody who hits a
home run.
Brussels or the Gorrie Mill but they would
have to get some financing for it.
"There may be a possiblity that in the
future the Authority could fix up one of the
mills," Mr. Grummett said.
He said the Authority is just startifig to
talk about the Brussels Mill and that they
can't spend large amounts of money on it
at this time.
The Ethel Conservation area is 28 acres
in size and because of its small area is used
mainly for demonstrations of woodlot
management. Future development plans
include the development of a better wildlife
habitat and nature trails and the develop-
of an educational interpretative program.
Mr. Grummett, said the area may be handy
for the students of Grey Central School in
Ethel. A parking lot and new trails are also
planned for this property.
But its main attraction for the public
right now may be public access to the river
for angling. There are limited forms of
fishing and canoeing access there too, Mr.
Grummett said.
The Sunshine Conservation area, 50 acres
in size, which is southwest of Brussels is

Money raised from the tournament goes to,
the recreation committee for arena
maintenance.
Wayne said the tournament gives the
people of Brussels an opportunity to see a
fastoall game because otherwise they have to
go to Walton or W Ingham to see one.
He points out that there are good
camping facilities nearby
