Few people realize that
farming is considered one of
North America's highest
stress-producing
occupations. The National
Institute for Occupational
Safety and Health in the
United States ranks the
operating of a farm in the top
10 percent in its listing of 130
high stress occupations.
Until recently, very few
agencies have .become
involved in programs helping
people to cope with stress,
particularly in farming.
Recently, the Alberta
Agriculture/Labour Farm
Safety Program, in
conjunction with Women of
Unifarm in that Province,
have developed a new
program called "Coping with

Pesticides kill!
That's what they are made
for. The problem facing the
user is how to make them kill
selectively.
Farmers rely more and
more on the use of pesticides
to kill destructive or nuisance
pests. The fact that these
chemicals are generally toxic
and sometimes even lethal
To reduce noise levels,
equipment should always be
kept well lubricated and
maintained, and all
components tight. Defective
mufflers and exhaust system
parts should be promptly
replaced.
Safety conscious farmers
use ear protection equipment
muffs and plugs on all noisy
jobs. The Canada Safety
Council urges general use of
ear protection and strongly
recommends that protection
begins the minute the
activity begins, for young
and old alike.
Stay away from a noise
source when you don't need
to be near to control or tend
the equipment. If you are
without ear protection, limit
duration of noise exposure to
a minimum.
April of this year, the two
sponsoring organizations
held 15 regional conferences
or workshops on stress, The
main purposes of the
workshop were to identify
stress sources on the farm
and determine the level of
stress in comparison to
previous years.
So far, the workshops have
identified 11 areas of
concern. Farm finances led
all other areas as an
identifiable stress area. Also
affecting the financial area
were factors that related
directly to finance; for
example, bad weather. Other
stress producing areas that
were identified were family,
work, farm management,
health and retirement, and
community social problems.
A major study shows
that farmers have a higher
incidence of hearing loss
than people in other
occupations. Farmers also
have the lowest proportion of
persons with better than
normal hearing.

safety precautions in their
handling.
Pesticid es should only be
handled outdoors or where
there is very good ventilation
says the Canada Safety
Council. Before mixing a
pesticide„ clear away
livestock, pets and non,.
workers. Put on needed
protective equipment and
refer, to the label before
starting and during the work
to make certain you are doing
everything correctly.
Avoid spills and splashes,
but if one occurs, stop work
immediately. Remove the
contaminated clothing, then
wash any affected skin with
water and detergent as
quickly as you can. Contain a
spill and sop it up with soil,
sand, rags, paper towels, etc
then scoop it all into a
leakproof container for
disposal. If the pesticide spill
occurs on a walking or
working surface or in a
vehicle, scrub the area with
detergent and water.
Heed label instruction for
measurement and exact
amount to be used. Stand so
the wind won't blow
pesticide on you. Tightly
close partially used
containers and return them
to safe storage.
