Bluevale wants hall to stay open
People from the Bluevale community at a
public meeting Monday night decided to set
up a committee to look into all the aspects of
repairing and renovationg,
and to explore the grant programs available
in order to keep the 13luevale Hall open.
Since the hall is in need of many repairs
which could cost about $1,000, and it has
been mainly used for euchre in the past, the
hall board members didn't know whether it
was worth keeping the hall open or not, so
decided to call a public meeting.
Keith Moffatt, a director on the hall
board, told the audience that the euchres
held in the hall were not anymore than
paying for themselves and as far as showers
and receptions went, only one such event
had been held in the hall last year.
He said the board decided to hold the
meeting to see if somebody was in favour of
having the hall stay open.
Bill Elston reeve of Morris Township, said

the hall would need money for a new roof,
new front steps, fixing the floor and paying
the operating bills. He said the Morris
council would like to help out with the hall
expenses but, "there's a limit to how much
you can give and how long you keep giving if
the community is not willing to keep it going
atthe same time."
He said they wanted the people's input to
see how they could raise some money
somehow outside the municipalities' assis-
tance.
Louise Marritt from the Rural Develop-
ment Outreach Program told them she didn't
live in Bluevale but that she worked in
community development for the University
of Guelph.
She said the basis of the problem seemed
to be that the people of Bluevale couldn't
decide what the hall was going to be used
for. She told them they would have to look at
the age span and at the wide variety of
groups in Bluevale. She then suggested that
the crowd break up into discussion groups in
order to identify the needs of the
community.
Although many things were suggested out
of these groups, needs were finally broken
down into three basic priorities, Older/Young
Activit y, a Public Hall for general use, and
Catering for local groups.
Don Eade, reeve of Turnberry Township
said the Turnberry council would probably
be interested in supporting the community
to remodel the Bluevale hall if council
members felt the community wanted to
support it and would use it.
Melanie McLaughlin, a consultant with
the Ministry of Culture and Recreation told
the Bluevale people it might be possible for
them to get grants for the hall through the
Ministry.
"I 'f you as a community are willing to
support the hall as your reeve has mentioned

A man sat in on a card
game for the first time. He
was more than a little sur-
prised to see a dog sitting at
the table. As he watched, the
dog drew three cards, held
them between the toes of one
paw and raised the ante with
the other paw. When the
man expressed amazement,
the dog's owner replied,
"Aw, he's not so good.
Every time he gets a good
hand, he wags his tail."
The football coach, deject-
ed because his team was
losing again, looked down
the bench of substitutes and
yelled, "All right, Smith, go
in there and get ferocious!"
Smith jumped up with a
start and cried, "Sure, Coach
What's his number?"

I can't see why we couldn't assist you with
some of your capital expenditures or for '
equipment. However, we cannot assist with
the operational expenditures," she said.
She suggested they could get funds from
Wintario which could pay 50 per cent and
then the community would have to match the
amount Wintario gave. Another grant
program she suggested was the Community
Recreation Centres program which could'
assist with the first 25 per cent of capital
costs.
After a few more moments of discussion it
was decided to set up a committee of people
including a teenager from the village to look
nto the renovation needs and explore the
possibilities of grants for the hall. The
committee was given six weeks in which to
do this and then another public meeting will
be called when the committee feels ready to.
present its facts.
