HARDWARE 087-6525, member', BBA Brussels THE BRUSSELS POST, JUNE 6, 1979 13 HPRCSS French program extended BY WILMA ME The Huron-Perth County Roman Catholic Separate School board approved the ex- tension of the French program in 18 of its 19 schools. at a meeting in Dublin Monday night. The 19th school, Ecole Ste. Marie at Zurich is a bilingual school. Beginning in September, 1980, the oral French program will be extended to include Grades 4 and 5, in addition to the Grades 6, 7 and 8 now taught French. The course will be taught in 20-minute periods daily, instead of the 40-minute periods every other day as now taught. The Ministry of Education considers the shorter periods every day easier for the student to learn French than the longer period every other day. William Eckert, Director of Education, said that it will mean doubling the number of teachers to eight from the 4% now teaching the French program. He said the teachers will be travelling more miles, increasing the mileage each day to 244 miles. up from the 219 miles per day now. In answer to a question from Trustee Vincent Young of Goderich about funding increased costs, Mr. Eckert replied that out of the four teachers hired funding would cover the cost of two of them from government grants. „. Trustee Young replied, That would equal another mill. r' Vice-Chairman Ronald Marcy noted that from a Ministry of .lucation article he had found that in Grades 4 that 44.0 per cent of the students in public school were taught French compared to 78.4 per cent in separate schools; and in Grade 5 that 55.4 per cent of the public students received French instruction compared to 81.1 per cent in the separate schools. Charges against Cayley Hill, a Goderich business- man and former trustee on the Huron County board of education, were dropped in provincial court recently due to lack of evidence. Mr. Hill, 52, was accused of fraudulently taking $25,000 in travellers cheques August 25, 1975 from The board amended its policy re kinder- garten children registering for classes. Presently before a kindergarten pupil can be registered and admitted to kindergarten for the school year, a child must attain the age of five (5) years on or before the 31st day of December. Where there are sufficient student spaces avaialble in the child's school of attendance, a child who attains the age of five (5) years after December 31, but prior to January 31, may on the request of the parent be registered for the school year. The board voted to accept the tender of McNab. Bus Sales Limited of St.Thomas to supply one 1978 International 66-passenger school bus and one 1978 International 54 passenger (automatic transmission) school bus for the amount of $33,169.60, after trade:in allowance. The board accepted the resignations of two of its bus drivers - Bernard Denomme, school bus driver at Ecole Ste. Marie and Charles Erb at St. Boniface School, Zurich. Approval was given by the board to the Early Assessment Identification Process of students for all kindergarten pupils according to the requirement of the Ministry of Education. The kit is used by the kindergarten teachers under the Huron Perth County separate school board, Mr. Eckert stated. The kit provides the kindergarten teacher with information which will give her a greater understanding of each child and it is then particularly helpful to the primary one teacher and the resource teacher in establishing individual programs for those students indentified as having learning disabilities. The board meeting was conducted under the bright lights of the Cable Television cameras. John McCarroll of Stratford, in charge of the five-man crew, commended the board members for their conduct with no showboating and no one trying to take over. He said the program would go on the air on Wednesday of this week between 6 This year, the Ontario Youth Secretariat allotted $31,116 to Maitland Valley Conservation Authority to employ 22 stuents for the Experience '79 summer program. The program was initiated on May 7th with 5 Technicians and 1 Senior Supervisor beginning work. The program commenced with a tour of the areas within the watershed, led by Rob Keip, the M.V.C.A. Community Relations Technician. Marcia Gibson, of • Wroxeter, is the Senior Supervisor this summer, pre- siding as program co- ordinator. Al Pickering, a graduate of Waterloo University, is the acting Resource Technician. Al is concerned with cartographic work and spring identification using thermal imagery. Andy Etmanski and Ralph Schroth, Co-op students from Wilfrid Laurier University, are working on a gully monitoring program along the Lake Huron Shoreline. They are conducting inventories of approximately 100 gullies, and assessing surrounding land uses and property-owner concerns. This information will then be used to determine the need for erosion control assistance and improved conservation .land management practices. The Environmental Education Research Technician is Maurice Wil- son, of Palmerston. Maurice's duties include completing an inventory of environmental education programs within the water- shed, reviewing current and 7 p.m. and again next week. He offered copies of the program to be used for showing in schools in those areas where the Mitchell Cable company does not reach. Any trustee wishing this was invited to telephone Mr. McCarroll. Charges against Hill dropped Champion Road Machinery Ltd. of Goderich where he was employed for 20 years before going into business on his own. The money was part of a $75,000 payment a private agent in Turkey was to receive for his efforts to sell several million dollars worth of Champion machinery to the Turkish government. Questions about the $25,000 were raised last year when Revenue Canada was reviewing the company's books last year. Mr. Hill was charged with fraud last December following the government agency's investigation by Crown Attorney Garry Hunter. Judge C.E. Perkins ruled that he could not see any evidence that Mr. Hill had any intention of defrauding Champion Road Machinery Ltd. and ordered the charges be dismissed. MCVA hires 22 students school cirriculum materials to prepare relevant teaching aids, and developing a plan for introducing teachers to the 'Land for Learning' pro- gram. Beverley Hoegy, of Brod- hagen, is this summer's Community Relations Technical Assistant. Bev is in (-hal ge of preparing plans for Maple Keys Sugar Bush and Wawanosh Valley Conservation Area.
