Renaissance involvement
with literature used in class-
' rooms stemmed from book
selection policies used by the
education system.. The
movement wants book
selection policies that
guarantee parents the right o
determine what their
children are taught.
Campbell's attack of
education systems bucking
Renaissance drew a revival
type response from the
crowd. His criticism of school
administrators that are
"unbelievably arrogant" and
school policies that require
parents to explain why they
don't want a book used drew
a chorus of "amens" from
the audience.
He told the parents there
was no way any "self re-
specting parents with any
personal worth or dignity
should have to write an essay
telling why he or she doesn't
want a book read".
"All that has to be said is I
don't want that book read .

Have you been wondering
if you can plant soybeans
with a drill? The answer is a
definite yes. You should
make some equipment
changes. To get a good
stand, the seed must be
planted at a 11/2 " to 2" depth
to insure even germination.
You can do this by working
the seedbed to a 2" depth
and increasing the tension on
the disc openers. It can also
be done by working the seed
bed deeper than 2" and
equipping the drill with
depth bands.
Fertilizer should never be
applied to soybeans through
a grain drill. The soybean
seed is sensitive to fertilizer
burn. Therefore, if you need
fertilizer it should be
broadcast.
Granular inotuluni can be
applied through the forage
seed box of a drill. This is
done by bringing a tube from
the forage seed boat to the
disc opener. The granular
inoculum hunt be in the toil
with the seed.
So beams need mere
did not "have the right to
impose values on my home".
He said parents should
"reject the totalitarian
concepts of those child
seducers".
Campbell said all
Renaissance wanted was
educators to observe the
good neighbor policy. He
said the good neighbor policy
shows respect for people's
differences. He said that
policy permits parents that
have objection sl.toiliterature
used in schools appeased by
providing their children with
alternatives.
He said literature parents
choose to have in their hom-
e's their own business but
literature used in classrooms
should show the good
neighbor policy.
He sai c any literature that
"creates fiction and tension
is unacceptable in a public
school room serving a
pluralistic society."
Campbell told the crowd
he did not know why
educators and publishers
held up works that have a
theme with a "note of
-despair and meaningless-
moisture to germinate than
does corn. Thus it is
important to pack the field
after planting. This packing
also pushes stones into the
ground. You will appreciate
this at harvest.
Finally, if you work the
seedbed too fine, to get a
good seedbed, the soil may
crust before the beans
emerge. This is especially
true for heavier soils. A
rotary hoe at emergence can
solve this probletn.Just don't
look back. You will probably
lose some beans and bring
up some stones.
SAFE USE OF PESTICIDES
If using pesticides as
part of your cropping
program this spring, there
are a number of points that
you should be aware of. The
most important, and one
which is often overlooked, is
to read the label and folloW
the directions outlined.
When handling pesticides,
be very careful to protect
your eyes, avoid inhaling the
fumes, dusts or droplets, and
avoid direct exposure to the
skin, For corn rootwortn
insecticides, this involves
yearning tubber gloves and

ness" as shining examples of
modern literature. He said
the youth of today are
suffering from the "deSpair
of meaninglessness" adding
that he found novels that
fostered that feeling more
objectionable than novels
containing "an occasional
blasphemy".
BY JACK HAGARTY
Farmers are skilled in the use of tools. In
Africa the hoe and long knife are used by
farmers. Not that long ago farmers in
Ontario used the fork to harvest hay and
grain. As a kid I helped Dad- stook grain.
He could stook five sheaves to my two. He
had the skill. I was learning.
At a recent meeting, Peter Hannam,
President of the Ontario Federation of
Agriculture said "in the last ten years a
farmer could make more money with a
pencil than he could with a fork. In the next
ten years, he will make more with a
computer than he will with a pencil."
rcently, I interviewed thirty 4-H mem-
bers ages 16,17) for an exchange trip to
other parts of Canada and U.S.A. One
question was "what education 'do you plan
past grade 12?" Most said they plan to
farm immediately after high school. Only a
couple mentioned Agricultural College. I
was Surprised! Last year at least one-half
said they planned to get further education
before returning to the farm.
I asked, "why not get a two year diploma
in agriculture?" The answer seemed to be
"what's the use, we are going to farm", or
"if we don't soon get farming it will be too
late", or "there are all kinds of people with
diplomas and degrees looking for work."
There seems to be an air of pessimism
hanging around secondary schools-perhaps
due to the shortage of jobs, Rural young
people pick up this attitude—even though
it may not be appropriate for their
situation.
The young person leaving school after
grade 12 may become very skilled in 'the
use of a fork; fair at the use of a pencil;
afraid to use the computer.
'Anyone who hasn't driven a tractor for
twenty years would be amazed at the dials,
levers and flashing lights on the modern
day units. Young people learn to drive
these tractors at home. But, how are they
going to learn hpw to drive the computer
and interpret its performance?
Some students work for a wage (or
income share agreement) on weekends and
during the five months college leave. This
gives them a testing period before making
a firm commitment to farming, School
seems a lot more interesting when the
academic subjects can be applied to the
home situation. Those who choose not to
farm after graduation have no trouble
finding jobs in agribusiness.
It's an exciting time; a time for
optimism; a time to develop skills for the
80's.
