THE BRUSSELS POST, MAY 9, 1979
Council decides on lot size
(Continued from Page 1) .1
In other business, the deficit on the senior
citizens apartment building was discussed.
In 1977 the deficit was $6057 while in 1978
the deficit was $6555. Grey Township pays
25 per cent of the deficit, Morris Township
pays 15 per cent per capita of people they
have in the building, and Brussels pays the
'rest,
Since Morris and Grey are now obligated
to pay their share to the County instead of
directly to Brussels, Brussels must now try
and collect Morris and Grey's share from the
county.
Since Brussels wasn't too sure that they
could get the amount they were owed this
way, they decided to see what procedure
they would have to go through toenter into
the county agreement.
Council also drew up a motion requesting
that the Maitland Valley Conservation
Authority proceed with the 1 in 100 year
flood plain mapping for the village of
Brussels with the understanding that the
village will pay 15 per cent of the cost. The
clerk was to check to see if it was necessary
for council to do anything else.
Neil Gowing was at council to ask what
procedure he had to go through to close off a
10 foot alleyway north of the trailer park as
he wanted to build on one of the lots
between Stretton and Ross Street, Council
was agreeable to closing the alleyway which
goes through the lot but there are some
other procedures Mr. Gowing has to go
through before it can be closed which he is to
check with the clerk. The alleyway was part
of an earlier plan for the village, when the
downtown had been laid out in that area
instead of where it is now.
Council discussed putting up signs at the
four entrances to the village advertising
available industrial land. Clerk Bill King was
to look into it.
Council heard that recreation is likely
going to get a grant totalling $2386 from the
Ministry of Culture and Recreation and that
recreation is applying for a 50 percent grant
of whatever is donated toward the tractor.
Karen Hastings who is on the recreation
commitee said that they have also received a
grant for hiring students for summer help for
recreation summer projects.
In other business council gave a donation
of $25 to the Salvation Army in Wingham
and decided to send $25 donations to disc
jockey Clifford Stevens for providing the
music at the recreation held for the
Belg ians and to Ken Webster for rooms at
the Brussels Inn for the Belgians.
County says no to Goderich program
Huron County council surrounding area. She said committee when he told
did not dispute the worth of she did not know exactly how council Thursday that
an, integration program for many handicapped were recreation was the
mentally handicapped people
in Goderich but balked at
supporting the program
because it is not county wide.
Council accepted the
recommmendation of its
executive committee
i'hursday and turned down a
-cquest from the Goderich
.',ecreation department for
'ands. The executive
,•ommittee heard the request
in March and turned it down
at that time but council was
asked to delay final decision
an the matter until a more
complete presentation could
be made by the Goderich rec
department.
Goderich reeve Eileen
Palmer persuaded council
not to make final decision on
the request without hearing a
presentation from Jane
Netzke, program co ordinator
in the Goderich rec
department. Palmer said the
mentally handicapped people
in the program were from
Goderich and the
involved in the program or
how many municipalities
were involved but asked that
a decision be delayed until
that information could be
presented.
Netzke explained that the
program was started in
Goderich under a ministry of
community and social
services grant that paid all
costs. That grant expired in
1978. At that time parents
and people involved in the
integration program joined in
an ap)ral to Goderich town
council ,to keep the program
operating and council
responded by funding the
program for at least one
more year.
Council's executive
committee sympathized with
organizers of the integiation
program but felt that
because it was confined to
the Goderich area the county
could not support it. County
clerk Bill Hanly summed up
the • concerns of the
responsibility the
municipality.
