THE BRUSSELS POST; MAY 9,1 1979 —
Mrs Crocker tells UCW
about life in Brazil
A SINGING SINGLE Jim Cox sang for his
portion of the Home and School Associaton's
Community talent night held in Grey Central
School on Thursday and Friday night.
Mrs. White entertained
the members of the after-
noon Unit of Brussels United
Church in her home with 18
ladies' in attendance. Mrs.
Evans chaired the meeting in
the absence of the President.
Her opening remarks of wel-
come included a short prayer
and a poem "What is a
Mother"?
The program was con-
vened by Mrs. Turnbull. All
joined in singing the hymn
"Happy the Home" The
Scripture, read by the leader,
was taken from Luke 14:
25-35. Mrs. Turnbull offered
Prayer. The meditation on
"The Home" was read by
Mrs. Hupfer.
Mrs. Crocker, who has
visited her daughter and
family living in Brazil gave
an interesting account of her
experience and general
information of that country
Thr6ughout her travelogue
she displayed many
souvenirs and manufactured
articles of clothing.
Brazil ranks fifth in size
with countries in the world. It
is a place of extreme poverty
as well as multiple riches.
The People are of Indian,
Portuguesse and African
ancestry. The climate is hot
and humid with almost equal
hours of day and night. The
world's largest forest re-
serves are in Brazil but very
little is manufactured from
them. Fish, sugar-cane-
coffee, coca, nuts and fruit
are produced abuandantly.
Rice and beans are staple
foods supplemented by meat
and vegetables. Good
drinking water is scarce.
There is a need for more
schools. Thus 35% of the
children never attend.
Teacher's are well paid and
highly respected.
Car manufacturing,
especially Volkswagon, is
very important as well as
shoes, most of which are
exported. Oil is produced in
abundance.
A Brazilian juice and fruit
conserves were served
during lunch time,
Special thanks were ex-
tended to Mrs. Crocker. Her
remarks were enjoyed by
everyone.
