Mac and Della Shaw
Fifty years ago on April 10, 1929, Mac and
Della Shaw were married at the Ethel United
Church.
To many people fifty years seems like a
long time for two people to stay together, but
as Mrs. Shaw says, "I guess we never
thought of anything else."
She added that marriage back in their day
was something that was for keeps.
Another reason they have stayed together
so long Mr. Shaw joked, was that "Neither
one of us are very good fighters."
Mac was born in Grey Township and Della
was born in Morris. After they were
married, they moved to the Shaw homestead
on the sixth concession where they stayed
for 27 years. They later moved to the 12th
concession of Grey where they farmed for 17
years.
While there, they started planting straw-
berries as a sideline and demand for them,
grew so much that pretty soon they had:
3,000 plants or about an acre of strawberries'.
Six years ago, they retired to John Street
in Brussels where they spend their time
gardening. They also like to go visit their
family.
They have two boys, Doug of Thornhill,
and Peter of Listowel, and three grand-
daughters, all of whom belong to Peter.
They include Cathy, Pauline and Donna.
Mrs. Shaw has five sisters and one
brother. They include Mrs. Harold Vodden
of Blyth, Mrs. Gene Cook of Blyth, Mrs.
Helen Gowing of Blyth, Evelyn Turvey of
Blyth and Mr. R. Turvey of Morris.
Visiting at the church with them on their
50th anniversary were guests from St.
Marys, Wingham„ Brantford and Hanover.
Retired now after farming career
