A starter fertilizer is in-
tended to help a plant during
its early stages of growth.
The ideal starter fertilizeris
high in phosphorus, since
phosphorus is the main
nutrient required by plants
for early growth. This
phosphorus should be placed
close to the seed to gain the
maximum effect. Generally
nitrogen is added to the
phosphorus at a 1 :4 ratio to
enhance the uptake of the
phosphorus. Often potash is
added to the starter
fertilizer. It takes time to
handle fertilizer and any
delay in planting means re-
duced yield. Spring grain
ycilds are lowered by 1 1/2
bushels per day after the first
of May, and corn 1 bushel

per day after the 15th of
May. The maximum starter
effect can be achieved with
about 30 kg./ha of
phosphorus, If extra
phosphorus is required it
should be bulk spread unless
the extra amount is too small
to sensibly spread.
For most crops 50 to 100
kg./ha. of a fertilizer with a
high phosphorus analysis
with the drill or planter is
sufficient. Extra fertilizer
should be broadcast.
SOIL FERTILITY MAY BE
SUFFICIENT
We had an enquiry re-
cently about the fertilizer to
use on some fields that had
been tested for fertility at the
lab in Guelph. The test
results indicated that no
phosphorus or potash was
required other than the
nutrients in the soil. The soil
fertility rating in each case
was Very High. The soil test
value for phosphorus was 50;
A 20 value indicates that no
additional phosphorus is
needed in order to grow the
most economical yield of the
crop. The soil test value for
potash was 200; A 120 value
indicates that no additional
potash is needed in order to
grow the most economical
yield of the crop. In addition,
the owner was planning to
apply 2,700 gals per acre of
liquid hog manure. At this
rate the manure would
supply 50 lbs. of actual
nitrogen, 25 lbs. of actual
phosphorus and 35 lbs. of
actual potash per acre.
We suggested that there
was no need to apply
phosphorus or potash on this
field either through the
planter or broadcast. The soil
fertility was built up to twice
what is required to grow a
crop. In addition the manure
acted as a safety factor by
providing 25 lbs. of actual
phosporus and 35 lbs. of
actual potash.
We did recommend the
application of 200 lbs. of urea
fertilizer. The 90 lbs. of
nitrogen coupled with the
manure would provide 140
lbs. of nitrogen for the crop.
This amount seemed more
than adequate, particularly
when the soil was in a high
state of fertility and would
have some residual nitrogen.
We're passing on this
example for three reasons.
Firstly we want to show that
consideration should be
given to the nutrients pro-
vided by manure when
planning any fertility pro-
gram. Secondly we want to
demonstrate that some fields
have reached very high

evels of fertility. Phosphorus
or potash nutrients stored in
the soil are the same as
phosphrous or potash
nutrients applied via
fertilizer. We might as well
make use of the balance that
has been built up. Thirdly,
one just doesn't know
whether the soil is low,
medium, high, very high or
excessive in fertility until a
test is taken. It's vital to take
at test - particularly when
large amounts of manure ape
being applied regularly. As a
result we will know what
credit is in the soil bank and
we can apply other fertility
accordingly. Thus it will be
possible to avoid the expense
of providing fertilizer that
isn't needed. It will also
enable us to know when
potash levels are building up
to the point where they may
tie up other nutrients such as
magnesium.
Some individuals will want
to experiment by planting
one area with starter and
another without and compare
the results. A soil test before
the crop and one in the fall
would indicate the effect on
soil fertility of the two pro-
grams. This type of practical
demonstration works well,
pays dividends in learning
more about the fertility
conditions on a specific
farm.

A young attorney working
on his first case had been
employed by a farmer to
prosecute a trucking, com-
pany for losing a shipment of
24 of the farmer's pigs. He
wanted to impress the jury
with the magnitude of the
loss, "Twenty-four pigs!
Twenty-four! Think of that!

you play an old ball?"
"Simple," came the reply,
"I never owned any old
