the
mascot!
Bobbi-Jo Rutledge
It's not every hockey team that can lay
claim to a real live mascot. The Brussels
Atoms team can. They've got Bobbi-Jo
Rutledge sister to Marty Rutledge, one of
the players on the team as their mascot.
As sister to Marty, three year old
Bobbi-Jo got to be mascot when Atoms
coach Bill Kieffer asked her mother if it
would be all right. That just happened,
this year and since then Bobbi-lo has been
leading the players onto the ice, has
received trophies and metals and generally
enjoyed the privileges that any of the other
hockey team members enjoy including her
meals. Bobbi-Jo is the daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Brian Rutledge of Brussels.
Although her mother Marlene says.
Bobbi-Jo doesn't think she'd like to play
hockey she obviously enjoys going to the
games where she gets a chance to play with
children her own age. The family tries to
attend as many of the hockey games as
possible. Bobbi-Jo also has another brother
Dean who plays hockey with the fieeVVees.
Bobbi-Jo has a sweater which was made
by Marg Garniss of Brussels and the
printing on it was done in liquid
embroidery by Marg's sister Frances
Breckenridge of Morris Township. The
sweater says Brussels Minor Hockey on the
front and Brussels Atoms Half Pint on the
back. Bobby Jo also wears hockey pants to
the games and even has her own hockey
stick.
Her brother says that sometimes when
the players go out on the ice for third
period, Bobbi-Jo gives them a pat on the
bum. She also sometimes holds the the
door,of the players dressing room open so
the oppsoing team can hear the Brussels
team cheer, her mother said.
Once the game is over, Bobbi-Jo is out
on the ice and one time in Brussels sheeven
got Out in time to shake the hand of the
coach.
Besides hockey, Bobbi-Jo also enjoys
figure skating and 'swimming and her
mother admits she even has another
addiction besides hockey. Bobbi-Jo loves
horses and she loves to watch horse racing ,
all summer.
Behind the scenes
by Keith Roulston
(Continued from Page 2)
The series has been immensely popular
with blacks because it gives them new
understanding and pride in their heritage.
It has been good for whites because it
shows just what horrid things people are
capable of doing to others. It lets us see
what it's like to be stepped on. Hopefully,
the understanding it brings will help kill
some of the racism and misunderstanding
that still plagues us, even in Canada today.
HistOty is important because if we look
at it, we can learn from -it and prevent
ourselves from making the same mistakes
again. Television and movies and plays and
books are important tools in making that
history come to life, to making it more than
dry facts by introducing us to what it was
like to lie in those times.
The tragedy of a series like Roots is that
it shows us what a power for good
television can be and it makes the usual
pap of game shows and silly situation
comedies look even more disgraceful.
