WALTON BRUSSELS
8 — THE 13.1FlOSE.L,S PQST, JANUARY 10, 1979
Food outlook for ' 79 is predicted
crop, Stocks of most storable
fresh vegetables including
cabbage and rutabaga should
be adequate. Prices of car-
rots and onions should
decrease throughout the
season due to large supplies.
Food prices will continue
to increase in 1979 but not as
much as in 1978. This was
the subject for much dis-
cussion at the December
Agricultural Outlook Confer-
ence held in Ottawa, Agricul-
ture Canada economists met
with farm,leaders, con-
sumers, agribusinessmen,
wholesalers and retailers to
study food supplies and
trends for the coming year.
Here are some predictions on
the probably market situ-
ation of some Canadian agri-
culture foods and food pro-
ditets in 1979.
MEAT - Beef supplies will
be lower this year by about S
to 10 per cent. The down-
ward trend will likely con-
tinue for two or three years.
Accordingly, prices will
remain relatively high.
There will be more pork
available in 1979 but the

light offering due to weather
conditions. There were 401
cattle and 585 pigs on offer.

reduced supply of beef
should keep pork prices up,
Prices could be somewhat
lower in the second half of
1979.
POULTRY AND EGGS -
Broiler chicken production
will likely continue to in-
crease 8 or 9 per cent above
last year. Current prices will
continue in 1979. In the
second half of the year,
increased supplies of chicken
turkey and pork may result in
more of these products being
substituted for beef. Turkey
prices should be lower later
in the year when supplies
increase.
Eggs should be in ade-
quate supply for all purposes
but if there is an increase in
egg consumption in 1979 it
will require increased
production.
DAIRY PRODUCTS - The
price for fresh milk is expect-
ed to be higher than in 1978.

Dairymen in Huron County
are invited to take part in a
one day educational program
on the handling and feeding
of high moisture corn to dairy
cows.

fered in two different
locations in the county. On
Jan. 16, the program will be
held at the Howick Com-
munity Centre, from 10 a.m.
to 3 p.m. On Thursday,
January 18, the same pro-
gram will be held in the
Clinton Legion Hall, starting
at 10 a.m.
In the morning, the topics
which will be covered include

cheeses and more should be
produced in 1979. Production
and consumption of ice
cream is expected to rise
slightly, while yogurtpro-
duction should continue to
expand. On the other hand,
not as much butter will be
produced or consumed. Skim
milk powder production will
also decline.
FRUIT AND VEGETABLE
- Apple supplies will be.
adequate although prices will
be similar to or above last
year's prices. Despite a large
North American crop and an
above average European
crop, the effect is being
offset by higher prices for
imported apples due to the
lower value of the Canadian
dollar, The exchange rate
will also increase the price of

imported processed apple
products and there should be
an increase in domestic pro-
duction. We can expect more
imports of fresh tender fruits
because of inadequate pro-
duction in Canada. As
demand increases, there will
be more direct sales of fruit
from producer to consumer.
Prices of most canned fruit
and some vegetables will
increase due to lower domes-
tic supplies. Demand for
canned and frozen vege-
tables should rise as fresh
vegetable prices increase.
The large stocks of frozen
vegetables should result in
some price decrease.
Canadian potato prices are
above 1978 low levels but will
not rise significantly in the
next few months because of

It forces the manure from the barn, through an underground

the important nitrogen and potassium inside the pile and also
reduces the odor and fly probleins. And the manure is ready
