6 THE BRUSSELS POST, JANUARY 10, 1979
Hockey action limited during Xmas holidays. Dr. and Mrs. Hazlewood

have returned from spending
the holiday season with their
family in Burlington and.
Hamilton.
Mrs. Danby has returned
People we know
home after spending the
holiday season in Weston
with her daughter and son-
in-law; Ron and Bertha
VVestcott.
The Gallery/Stratford has
announced the opening of
two exhibitions, Hagan, The
Mind and the Hand, and
Brian Porter, Recent
Paintings.
HaganThe Mind and the
Hand has been organized by
the Grimsby Public Library
and Art Gallery. Fred Hagan
has been a professional artist
and teacher all of his adult
life. This retrospective col-
lection of paintings,
drawings and prints spans a
period from 1938 to 1976.
The earliest works are street
scenes when Hagan found
that painting was a re-
velation, he went to drawing
classes in the evenings and
on Sundays spent his time on
street studies. The work
expanded as he moved to the
country and visited
Algonquin Park. Military
scenes from the Second
World War form an
important segment. More
and more interest in the
figure is evinced, print-
making becomes a major
preoccupation with an ex-
ploration of the potential of
lithography. Fred Hagan has
influenced generations of
young artists in Ontario
through his many years of
teaching at the Ontario Col-
lege of A rt. This represent-
ative exhibition is an over-
view of the development and
changes in an important
artist 's career in the Pro-
vince of Ontario. Fred Hagan
is a genial, gruff individual,
there is a twinkle in his eye,
Minor hockey activities
were very limited over the
holiday season and last
week's stormy weather
didn't help either.
Prior to Xmas the Midget
team travelled to Hensall
where they played to a 2-2
tie. Brussels' goals were
scored by Ken. Higgins and
Ken Cousins with assists by
Paul Johnston, Paul Bragg,
and Brian Tenpas.
The Bantams also played
Zurich before the holiday and
were tied 1-1 until the last
minute of the game when
Zurich scored the winning
goal. Brussels' only goal was
scored by Kevin Bishop as-
sisted by Todd Wheeler and
Peter Benett.
The Midgets were at home
to Hensall during the break
and were defeated 7-3. Paul
Johnston scored 2 goals -and
Ken Cousins scored 1.
Assists went to Brian Tenpas
and Ken Cousins.
They were also at home to
Elma-Logan and after
trailing the first two periods
came back to win the game
5-4. Scoring for Brussels wer(

The second exhibition,
Brian Porter, Recent
Paintings, has been prepared
by the Art Gallery of Nova
Scotia. The exhibition in-
cludes works completed over
the past two years while the
artist lived in Yarmouth,
Nova Scotia. Brian's images
originate from his dreams
which are then recorded
permanently in paint. They
are meticulously executed
with care and skill. These
works are produced by a man
who feels very detached and
who has a love for his work.
"It doesn't matter where you
live," he says, "life consists
of two activities: painting
and waiting to paint
pictures". Brian says very

little about his work and
concludes that paintings
speak for themselves. In
comparison with the Hagan
show, the strange imagery,
the juxtaposition of human
and animal forms, the un-
usual viewpoint all will make
an interesting comparison
between one artist's outer
look on life and another
artist's record of his dreams.
