Building permits in '78 double '77
The total value of building permits issued
in Brussels in 1978 is double that of
last year.
This year, the town clerk's office has
issued $361,155 in permits, compared to
$180,625 in permits issued in 1977.
Nearly all the permits have been issued to
build private homes - a total of $328,180. In
1977, the value of residential permits came
to only $66,175.
1977 was a bigger year for
commercial construction though with per-
mits of $114,450 while in 1978 it was
$32,975.
Clerk Bill King speculated the reason the
total dollar figures had doubled in 1978 was
the fact more houses were built in the
village.
He said the largest commercial building
permit issued in Brussels this year was a
$14,000 permit to CIL Ltd.
In 1977. 54 building permits were issued
in Brussels while 51 j)CrIllits were issued in
1978:
"Overall we had a pretty good year for
building permits," the clerk commented.
Brussels Maple Villa Club gets
Federal grant of $3,933 for activities
A New Horizons grant of $3,933 has been
awarded to the Maple Villa Club in Brussels
for their Health and Fitness Club use. The
Christmas Eve in Mississauga, when we
retired late, had not a flake of snow to
herald a White Christmas. We were
resigned to experiencing our first green one.
At 4:00 a.m. I wakened and parted the
drapes at my window. There before .me was
a perfect picture card scene of a beautiful
white Christmas. The street vas wrapped in a
robe of unmated white that reflected the
lights of Christmas displays. Every home,
tree and shrub wore a veil of white
unmarked by man. Silent Night Holy Night.
All was calm, All was bright.

We are on the threshold of a new year.
What awaits us, and the world, in this year
of 1979? Now the joys, sorrows, achieve-
ments, and failures of the old year are
behind us. We' must venture into the new
year with hope far better things and the
courage to face whatever comes. Will this
year bring peace to the trouble spots of the
world? Will our own country find a
satisfactory solution to the problem that
threatens to divide Canada? We must all
work toward better understanding and
friendly relations with all people. Each of us
award was one of 68 awarded to groups of
retired people in Ontario.
The Maple Villa Club will use the grant
must look to our affairs and strive, by our
efforts to improve, not only our own lot, but
that of others. We must not forever seek
help elsewhere but depend on our own
strength and energy to provide for our-
selves.

The holiday season is over. Thanks to the
kindness and consideration of my tamfly,
and their friends, it was a happier one for me
than it otherwise would have been.
Christmas is a joyous time but for the lonely
ones, who have no one to share it with, it can
be a time of despair and depression. there
are many such people. How lucky we are
who have family and friends around us.
