January 3rd and all members welcome. 52c Volume jumps at post office Despite an increase in postage rates the volume of mail handled at the Exeter Post Office this year was considerably larger than a year ago. Assistant Postmaster Keith Ahrens said this week that incoming Christmas mail up to December 23 numbered 158,895. The 1977 figure was 135,215. Mail sent out by Exeter residents was also much more in abundance. This year’s total was 116,350 compared to 109,450 of a year ago. The return of families and sunshine added up to a good summer for Grand Bend businesses. September 7 A passing motorist saved three St. Thomas residents following a fire accident south of Exeter. A fire at Grand Bend destroyed two cabin cruisers and other damage totalling $25,000. The Huron Country Playhouse had its most successful season ever with over 20,000 patrons coming to the theatre. The Huron County plowing match held near Seaforth drew a- record number of entries. A proposed study of Grand Bend’s harbour by the ministry of industry and tourism received a cool reaction from the village council. The Hensail community centre fund was only $16,000 short of its $175,000 ob­ jective. September 14 The Lucan Community Centre was officially opened with former provincial minister of agriculture William Stewart as the guest speaker. Several objections to Exeter’s new zoning bylaw were heard at a public meeting. The Kirkton ladies won the Provincial Women’s Softball Association “CC” cham­ pionship defeating Penetang. For the first time in many years, the sun shone brightly at the annual Kirkton fall fair. September 23 A final decision on the town’s new zoning bylaw was delayed in order to give council more time to study the matter. Memories of 1977’s fall were being recalled as heavy rains hampered the har­ vesting of crops.T-A editor Bill Batten detailed his 10 days with Canada’s military in West Germany. Grand Bend and Stephen township continue to have their problems with the Walden subdivision being latest bone of contention. A storm sewer project for Hensail valued at $500,000 was approved by village council. September 28 Hay Reeve Jack Tinney announced he is seeking the post of Warden of Huron county. It was a record attendance . of over 60,000 that attended the International Plowing Match held near Wingham. Tracey Campbell was named Queen of the Exeter Fall Fair. Plans were announced to stage a South Huron Olympics in two years time. The final service at St. Pauls Anglican Church, Hensall was held. The South Huron Rec Centre Board learned once again the town needs another ball diamond. Grand Bend council met behind closed doors to discuss the village’s proposed annexation of portions of Bosanquet and Stephen townships October 5 Some proposed uses of the shopping plaza located in Exeter’s north end were not permitted when the town’s zoning bylaw was passed. Picket line incidents at the strike bound Fleck Manufacturing plant in Huron Park scared off a Windsor firm. Exeter council gave its approval to a county-wide police communications system. Bulk users of water in Lucan had their rates doubled. Charges arising out of the Fleck strike cost Huron- Middlesex MPP Jack Rid­ dell over $8,000. After many years, Grand Bend finally received ap­ proval for sanitary sewers for the village. October 12 The developer of the northend shopping plaza threatened to take legal action if two of his prospective tenants were not permitted. Bendix Home Systems of Hensall was sold to the Commodore Corporation of Syracuse Indiana. A Hensall area man was sentenced to 60 days following an assault against an Exeter man in Sep­ tember. Stephen Reeve Cecil Desjardine announced he would not be seeking re­ election in the municipal election, Randy Parsons, became the first student from South Huron District High School to win thei Huron-Perth singles tennis championship. Joanne Malone of Cen­ tralia won three awards at an international horseshoe in Toronto. October 19 Veteran Exeter councillor Derry Boyle announced he would seek the mayor’s job only as a “last resort.” The Huron County Board of Education and its elementary teachers ratified a one year contract calling for an 8,97 percent wage increase. The Town of Exeter faced a lawsuit of up to $500,000 if a stop-work order on one of three vacant portions of the northend shopping plaza was not lifted. The Grand Bend recreation committee organized physical fitness clashes for the resort’s citizens. October 26 Derry Boyle was ac­ claimed mayor following a last minute filing and sub­ sequent withdrawal of nomination papers by in- cumbant Bruce Shaw. Under threat of a lawsuit, Exeter council backed off and removed a stop work order from one of the stores in the northend shopping development. Ratepayers would be going to the polls in five area municipalities. A young Centralia man, Bruce Gaynor was killed in a violent two car crash on the Mt. .Carmel road. The South Huron District High School girls won the Huron-Perth cross-country championship. Only 20 ratepayers turned out to hear the candidates for the various council positions in Tuckersmith township. Plans were announced for a fund raising campaign to secure a new ball diamond and other facilities in Exeter’s community park. November 2 Several incidents of vandalism were reported during the Halloween period. Two footballers, Steve Beer and Sean Waldren suffered a broken leg and internal injuries, respec­ tively, in a game against the Goderich Vikings. The Exeter PUC denied a request from a member of its staff that he be allowed to become a member of the Exeter Volunteer fire department. James Murphy, artistic director for the Huron Country Playhouse an­ nounced his resignation to be effective at the conclusion of the 1979 season. William Mungall was hired as the new resources manager of the Ausable- Bayfield Conservation Authority. Judy Uniac was acclaimed deputy-reeve for Grand Bend. November 9 The new Hensall and District Community Centre was officially opened before a crowd of 250 people. The Exeter and Area Fire Board was unsure how or who will answer calls to the department in 1979. The Huron Country Playhouse received a grant ' of $10,000 from the Sully Foundation of Goderich. The readers of the Times Advocate learned that a smoking, overweight, 42 year old editor is apparently in better shape than a non­ smoking, clean living, svelte 23 year old editor of the Zurich Citizens News. It was learned Grand Cove Estates of Grand Bend was planning to expand. November 16 Don Cameron, a newcomer to politics and the town was a major surprise in Exeter’s municipal elections as he finished third out of a slate of eight candidates. In the race for Hay township reeve, incumbant Jack Tinney bested challenger and Deputy-reeve Claire Deichert by a two to one margin. Exeter Mayor Bruce Shaw charged MacLean’s magazine with a form of censorship in their decision to drop an article about book banning from their issue sold in Huron county. The South Huron District High School junior Panthers lost to Goderich in the Huron-Perth final. Quick action by the Exeter and Hensall fire depart­ ments averted a disaster when the paint room of Northlander Mobile homes in Exeter caught fire. November 23 John Vanderloo, 19 of R.R. 3 Lucan and Albert Ball, 70, of Crediton were killed in separate accidents. Members of committees who were responsible for the completition of the South Huron Rec Centre were feted at a dinner and dance. The Exeter Hawks turned their season around and won their fifth consecutive game. South Huron District High School held their annual commencement exercises. Grand Bend council ex­ pressed concern about sewer installation ripoffs. Hensall Reeve Harold Knight said in his inaugural address the village might have to practise fiscal restraint in the upcoming year. Henry Martens was killed in a two car crash north of Strathroy. Mayor Derry Boyle praised the South Huron Recreation Centre Board for its management over the centre’s first year of operation. Exeter council passed a resolution supporting the revamping of facilities at the community partk. The Santa Claus parade attracted 64 entries. Grand Bend council agreed to set up a parking committee. December 7 Exeter Mayor Derry Boyle said 1979 should be a year of restraint. December 21 A 23 year old Exeter man, Exeter Police Chief Ted Day .suggested he had not over-stepped his authority by authorizing the at­ tendance of Constable Kevin Short at a special course'on fraud at the Ontario Police College. Bean losses for 1978 were considerbly less than in 1977, the'Ontario Bean Producers Marketing Board learned at its annual meeting held in Hensall. The village of Grand Bend and Grand Cove Estates were close to signing an agreement on the disposal of the development’s sewage. December 14 Hay Reeve Jack Tinney was acclaimed Huron county warden. Michael Alain Turcotte of Thunder Bay was charged following an incident at the . men’s dormitory at the : Centralia College • of Agricultural Technology which saw three floors inundated with 2,500 gallons of water. New Stephen township Reeve Kenneth Campbell said the proposed annexation of a portion of Stephen by Grand Bend and a water system for Dashwood will be two of the major issues *in 1979.
