Don and Doris Wilson WILSON'S JEWELLERY Beside Bank of Montreal Exeter PIeasing You, Pleases Us i^By ELAINE TOWNSHEND I’m spending the week between Christmas and New Years the same way I spend it every year — rolling from one meal to the next and from one box of goodies to another. When I use the word roll, I’m serious; I feel almost as stuffed as the turkey, but that doesn’t stop me from eating more. It’s easy to forget last year’s resolution about not eating so much this Christ mas. and I try not to think about the pounds I’ll have to lose in the New Year. Will power is not in my make-up at this time of year. __ I might take a little time out for travelling, visiting, entertaining, giving and receiving gifts and maybe even working, but the main emphasis is on food. Gift giving is another im portant part of the holiday in our family, and it requires weeks of hinting and shop ping. In early December, I suggested that the family could pool their resources and give me an unforget table Christmas present — a round-trip all-expense-paid visit to Hawaii to commence January 1, 1979 and to con tinue for the duration of the Canadian winter. None of the family seemed to think it was a good idea, but one of them offered a compromise — a one-way ticket to Timbuktu. I took my plea to a higher court, but I guess even Santa has to tighten his purse strings now and again. Oh, well, I’ll try again next year. My six-year-old nephew gave me the next best thing to a trip — a Road Runner air freshener to hang in my car. A few weeks ago, when I asked him what he wanted for Christmas, I was sur prised to learn how quickly he was growing up. He wanted a record, but not one Odds 'n ends The week between is rolling Joanne's House of Hairstyling 365 William St. from Sesame Street or one of Funny Favourites. He wanted Saturday Night Fever. “It’s decent!” he explain ed. I tried to surprise people with my gifts this year, but my teen-aged nephew wouldn’t believe his parcel was a stiffly starched shirt instead of a record. Even though I packed my niece’s earrings in a large box and added extra weight, she still guessed correctly. Maybe it’s because for the last three months she’s been telling me to give her nothing but silver earrings for Christmas. I shocked my brother-in- law by not giving him socks. Buying for him took a com- bined effort this time. He wanted a tall plant for his of fice, and my sister and I decided Mom was the logical one to give it to him, because she was the only one who could keep it alive until Christmas. I gave him a planter to hold his plant. Logical, right? Unfortunately ’ wrapped my gift first. he un- My sister wouldn’t let me see my present before Christmas Day. I have this habit of shaking and weighing the parpel and thinking about it, until I figure out what’s inside. My family and friends gave me lovely gifts ag^in this year. (I forgive them for not coming up with the ticket tOvHawaii, and I’ll give them another chance next year.) Meanwhile I’m spending this week between Christ mas and New Years amid discarded wrapping paper and too much food but also many wishes for a 1979. T-A photo By JOY SCHEIFELE AILSA CRAIG The staff and children of East Williams Public School proved courageous Thur-, sday morning. The annual Christmas program had to be cancelled the evening before due to icy roads and bad driving conditions. Thursday morning found the school buses still not operating and almost half of the children absent from classes. Nevertheless, at zero hour the general feeling was that the show must go on and parents were quickly notified by telephone that the program would be held that morning. A good number of parents and neighbours dropped whatever they happened to be doing and came out to hear their children. Unfortunately with many children filling in EGIN 79 WITH GOOD % YEAR END FABRIC absent members program did not hold up to its usual high standards, but, solists Lois McCallum and Donna McLaughlin with the junior choir gave out standing performances. Janyce McGregor of the kindergarten class was the hit of the morning as she performed a lively tap dance in the kindergarten toy shop skit. Friday morning, January 5, has "been scheduled for a i special performance by the I grade one class which was missing a high ratio of pupils. It is hoped that parents and friends will again take time out in the morning to hear their children who have put many hours of work into the I preparation of their per formance. As a Christmas treat each of the young Explorer girls invited their moms to their annual Christmas party December 19. The evening- got off to a friendly start as both mothers and daughters participated in a number of relay races. Passing the orange under the chin took on additional difficulties when a tall mom found herself next to a tiny daughter. The devotions were led by leader Ellen Whitmore with explorer Carrie Keith reading the scripture passage. Each of the girls ex changed Christmas gifts with mothers also being invited to share in gift giving. To complete the evening the girls then served refreshments to their guests, and to each other.
