Friday night the Marauders dropped a close 6-5 decision to the Zurich Buckeyes and Sunday night they were on the wrong end of a 10-7 count to Thedford. The Centralia club will meet Kettle Point tonight, Thursday at the Huron Park arena at 8:30 p.m. They are then idle until January 4 when they play host to Thed ford. In Sunday’s contest, Thed ford took a 4-2 lead at the end of the first period and were never headed. Rick Funston started the Centralia scoring at 10:18 on a pass from Bill Hodge and Ron Funston scored the first of four goals three minutes later. The only second period Centralia goal came at 9:59 from the stick of Bill Hodge with Rick Funston providing the assist. Ron Funston took over the Centralia scoring in the third period with three con secutive successful shots. One of Funston’s scores came on an unassisted effort and assists on the others were credited to Bill Hodge, Bob Snell and Rick Funston. Grant Campbell and Norm Gratton led the Thedford scoring attack with three goal performances each. Scoring in single fashion were Jerry Beernink, Dave Sharpe, Ken Bowles and Dwayne Molloy, The Marauders were in Goderich Monday night and suffered a 13-2 defeat at the hands of the Goderich Merchants. The first Centralia goal in the first period came from the stick of Mark Cronyn on a pass from Ron Funston. In the final period Bill Hodge hit the Goderich net with the assist going to Paul Theander. They hold a three-point lead over Mitchell, not coun ting last night’s contest, but the latter have four games in hand over Exeter. Friday night, the Hawks will host the southern co leaders from Belmont at the rec centre and then head for Mitchell for a head-to-head struggle for the top spot on Boxing Day. The locals, who have lost only once in their last 14 starts, started the week off with a narrow 5-3 win over Lucan and then bombed Bothwell by an 8-2 margin, Friday. Their biggest scare came on Sunday when the lowly Mt. Brydges Cougars came to town and had the Hawks on the ropes before the defending league champs pulled out an 8-6 verdict. Mt. Brydges led 4-3 after the second period and mov ed ahead by a 6-3 count early in the third before the Hawks caught fire with five unanswered tallies to take the contest. Three of those goals came while Jerry Doyle was sit ting out a five-minute major for high sticking. Ken Pinder and Don McKellar scored two goals each to pace the win, while singles were fired by Preston Dearing, Dave Bogart, Jamie Caldwell and Brian Mercer. It was the first goal for the latter, who joined the lineup this week after sitting out with a foot ball injury. Dearing had three assists to lead in that department, while Mercer, Dave Atthill, Dave Kinsman, Kerry Bedard, and Jamie Caldwell had a pair each. Picking up a single assist was McKellar. The Cougars picked up four penalties while Hawks served only two. season as he picked up half the team’s output in Friday’s 8-2 win over Bothwell. The speedster also picked up one assist for a five-point night. Don McKellar added two goals and two assists, while the single tallies came of the sticks of Preston Dearing and Dave Kinsman. The Hawks spotted the visitors an early goal, but rattled in three in the last two minutes of the first period to take a lead they never relinquished. They upped the margin to 6- 1 at the end of the second and out-scored Bothwell by a 2-1 margin as they coasted through the third period. Randy Lovie had 31 shots to handle, while the Hawks were blasting 54 in the direc tion of Gene McChesney. Ken Pinder, Preston Dearing and Kerry Bedard joined McKellar in the dou ble assist department, while being credited with one each were Ken Varley and Dave Atthill. Bothwell picked up seven penalities, while the Hawks served only four. the Irish beat Randy Lovie on one of their 20. Brad Taylor opened the scoring at the 5:31 mark of the first on a play with Terry Caldwell and Ken Varley, but the Irish took a 2-1 lead on tallies by Jeff Marshall and Keith Hartwick. Dave Bogart knotted the count in the first minute of the second on an unassisted effort and Terry Caldwell made it 3-2 at the 5:21 mark with help from Varley and Dave Atthill. With 11 seconds to go in the period, Jeff Hartman evened the score and it stayed that way until mid way through the third when Kerry Bedard finished off a play with Jamie Caldwell and Don McKellar. Bedard picked up the clincher at the 17:48 mark with Caldwell and Preston Dearing drawing assists. Lovie ended up stopping 33 shots for the Hawks, while Steve Harrigan had 29. Only 13 minor penalties were assessed, none of which figured in the scoring. The Exeter figure skating club held another successful series of test days, December 11 and 12. However, the Hawks won the battle of which could score the most goals, by a 5-3 count. Surprisingly, the Hawks won the tilt with two un answered goals in the final period, although they were noticeably tired in view of their lack of depth, having only two complete lines. Nine of those players figured in the scoring column. The game also proved that a busy goaltender is often a hot goaltender. Exeter had 17 shots in the first period, counting on only one, while the Irish picked up two on seven shots.
