Bantams in running for llderton championship
The Exeter bantams,
silver medalists in last
year’s llderton tournament,
took the first step towards
the gold honors this year
when they beat Stoneybrook
5-1 in their initial test, Fri
day.
The locals return to face
Blenheim in a 9:30 p.m. con
test this Saturday and if they
win that one, they’ll go into
the finals on Sunday at 6:30.
Bill Glover paced the tour
nament win with a three-
goal performance, while
Mike Clark and Dave
Underwood contributed the
singles.
Exeter warmed up for the
event with a 5-2 win over
London in a Shamrock tilt at
the rec centre, Wednesday.
After spotting the visitors
a 2-1 lead, the locals came
back to take a lead at the
end of the second and added
the insurance markers in the
third.
Scott Pincombe scored a
pair, while singles were
fired by Dave Shaw, Mike
Clark and Dave Underwood.
Pincombe and Shaw also
had a pair of assists.
Atoms lose pair
The Exeter atoms main
tained their losing ways
when they were drubbed by
Strathroy 7-1 and 5-1 in a
pair of weekend tilts.
Sean Whiteford scored the
only goal in the loss at
Strathroy, while Brett
Batten potted the lone goal
in the home defeat, with the
assist going to Terry
Zachar.
Netminders Steve Pym
and Jim Lewis faced a
steady barrage of shots in
the tilts.
Scoreless draw
The Exeter and Strathroy
novice teams skated off the
ice to a resounding ivation
at the rec centre. Sunday,
after battling to a scoreless
duel that had the fans on the
edge of their seats
throughout.
The game was a wide-open
affair with play racing from
one end to the other, but
neither team made the cost
ly mistake that would have
resulted in the loss.
Most fans agreed it was
the best game they had seen
for some time as the entire
lineup on both sides played
hard and consistent
throughout.
In a Saturday afternoon
tilt. Lucan clipped the Wax-
ers by a 4-0 score in an ex
hibition contest Jeff Bond
scored a pair for the
winners.
Midgets lose
In an exhibition tilt,
Wednesday, the Exeter
midgets dropped a 4-2 deci
sion to Thedford.
Exeter battled back to
even the count on two oc
casions. but the visitors
scored a pair of unanswered
tallies in the third.
Dave Jackson and Wayne
Smith scored for the
locals, with Jeff Fuller pick
ing up assists on both. Smith
and Steve Pearce helped on
one.

On one line shift, three
successive scoring attempts
were thwarted by the posts.

finished off a neat three-way

Buckeye victory
Hustle.
That’s the best word to
describe the Zurich
Buckeyes victory in the “A”
final of eight team in
termediate hockey tour
nament held over the
weekend in Hensail.
The Buckeyes took the $400
top prize for their efforts.
Zurich fought its way into
the top grouping of the
tournament which was
sponsored by the Hensall
Minor Athletic Association
by defeating Hensall by a
margin of 31-27 in shots on
goal, outscoring Monkton 7-4
and in the final game edging
Parkhill 4-3.
Spokesman for the Athletic
Association, Bill Taylor said
they were very pleased with
the way the tournament
turned out with a good
chance that the tournament
will be held next year.
Taking the “B” title was a
team from Exeter made up
of Pfaff Electric and the Les
Pines from the Exeter Rec
league.
In the
defeated

Leading the way for
Exeter was Jim Guenther
with two goals while singles
went to Larry Haugh, Ken
Bergmen, and Scott Burton.
Matt Muller picked up the
lone Huron Park goal.
Exeter found itself in the

Scoring the only Exeter
goal of the 4-1 loss was
Burton.
Grand Bend goals in the
game were scored by Pete
Gil with two, Paul MaGuire
and Larry Laye.
Exeter came back with a
victory as they defeated
Mildmay 8-2 to reach the
“B” final.
Scoring two goals apiece
for Exeter were Bergmen,
Haugh and Geunther.
Singles went to Burton and
Randy Gilfillan.
The game was on the
rough side with referees
Brian Campbell and John
Varley calling a total of 31
penalties.
