Pee wees record first victories
The Exeter pee wees had a
hard time winning in their
initial Shamrock league ac
tion, but came on strong this
week to post two con
secutive wins and lose a
third encounter by a one-
goal margin when they fail
ed to get any lucky bounces.
They started the week off
with a 3-1 win over Oakridge
and thenTollowed it up with
his mates added three more
before 15 minutes had elaps
ed to take a commanding
lead from which the Jets
could never recover.
Randy Kraul fired the
first goal for the Jets at
16:50 of the opening period
on a pass from Jamie Robb
and the other marker came
in the middle frame from
the stick of captain Barry
Baynham. Assisting was
Dave Revington.
Randy Aitken and Jamie
Stickney each scored twice
to lead Chatham scoring at
tack. Adding single scores
were Dave Easton, Gary

COUNTRY
The Lucan-Ilderton Jets
came up with only one vic
tory in three starts this
. week in the Ontario Hockey
Association Contenental
senior league, but, it came
in exciting fashion.
With less than four
minutes left in the third
period Friday night Ed Robb
scored on a solo rush to give
the Jets a 4-3 victory over
the Preston Jesters in
Preston.
The two defeats came at
the hands of the Chatham
King Grain Maroons in a
home and home series. The
Chatham club scored a 6-3
win on home ice Wednesday
and defeated the Jets 7-2 in
Ilderton Sunday afternoon.
The only action for the
Jets this coming week com
es Sunday night when they
visit the London Gardens to
meet the London Kings in a 7
p.m. contest.
In Friday’s victory in
Preston the Jets took a 2-0
lead on goals by Ed Parkin
son and Marty Reynolds.
The Jesters came back in
the second period to tie the
score temporarily on goals
by Murray Markle and Dave
Chapman. The lead was
short-lived as Brian Dundas
scored for the L-I club on a
short-handed effort on a
pass from Marty Reynolds.
Gerry Harrigan counted
for Preston in the third
period to tie the score and
set the stage for Ed Robb’s
game winner at 16:37.
Lome Daer was in goal for
the Jets and in the words of
manager Don Urbshott
“turned in a super effort.’’
Daer faced 40 shots from the
Jesters.
Sunday in Ilderton, Randy
Aitken scored for Chatham
at the 59 second mark and
r
Brown and Chuck Bosynak.
The same story was true
in Chatham Wednesday
night with the Maroons jum
ping into an early 3-1 lead.
Ed Parkinson was the first
period marksman for the
Jets on a three-way effort
with Jamie Robb and Dave
Revington. At 8:36 of the
thirds session, Bill White
blinked the light behind the
Chatham net on passes from
Dave Warren and Jim
Pinnegar.
Gary Herr converted a
pass from Jim Pinnegar at
14:36 to complete the Jets
scoring.

seven minors in the chippy
contest.
Rebound for tie
The Exeter bantams
spotted London a two-goal
lead and then came back to
pick up a tie in their only
outing of the week.
The locals picked up 11
penalties to play a fair por
tion of the game short-
handed.
Dave Shaw and Bill
Glover fired the Exeter
tallies with Tom Coates
assisting on one.
Glover’s tying goal came
just seconds before the ice
machine came onto the ice
to prematurely curtail the
contest. Exeter had two men
in the penalty box at the
time.
Waxers get single
The Exeter Waxers scored
one point in two Shamrock
outings this week.
They dropped a 5-2 verdict
in St, Marys Saturday after
noon," but eked out a 1-1 tie in
Mt. Brydges the following
afternoon.
Exeter again had difficul
ty controlling the one-man
attack by Owen Lessard of
St. Marys as he scored three
times.
Jon O’Connor banged
home Exeter’s first tally in
the second-period and Rob
bie McLean took a pass from
B.J. Batten to score the
other marker in the final
stanza.
O’Connor found the mark
for the Waxer’s only goal in
the Mt. Brydges contest,
scoring early in the game.
The locals put on a con
certed effort to break the tie
in the last fewz minutes of
the game, but just missed
the corners on their shots.
This week the Waxers
travel to Lucan for a Satur
day game and host Strathroy
at the rec centre on Sunday
at 6:00
The Exeter atoms dropped
their two starts this week,
losing both by identical
scores of 3-1 to St. Marys
and Oakridge.
Exeter took a one-goal
lead in the St. Marys contest
when Brett Batten raced in
all alone after taking a pass
from Bryan Quinn.
However, .the home crew
came back with two of their
own before the end of the
first and pulled the game out
of reach with another tally
in the second.
Sunday’s game in
Oakridge was just the op
posite, as Exeter dropped
behind 3-0 before Danny
McLean scored on an un
usual goal late in the con
test.
Exeter had a power play
attempt and Batten dug the
puck out along the boards
and flipped it to the blueline
where McLean rifled a shot
towards the goal and it
found the open corner
behind a startled netminder.
a 6-1 win against London.
The loss came Sunday after
noon when Oakridge gained
some revenge with a 3-2 win
on their home ice,
Steve Batten paced the at-,
tack that broke the pee wee
winless streak as he scored
twice in the 3-1 win over
Oakridge. Steve Laithwaite
picked up the other counter.
Drawing assists on the
goals were John Wells. Jeff
Pfaff, Darren Vandergunst.
George Pratt and, Brent
Dawson.
In London, Thursday, the
locals scored four times in
the first and then coasted to
their triumph.
Scott Lovie led the way
with a two-goal perfor
mance and the singles came
off the sticks of Steve
Laithwaite. Doug Scott,
George Pratt and Scott
Bogart.
Recording assists were
Steve Gould and Darren
Vandergunst with a pair and
singles by Ken Renning,
Trevor Johnston, Scott
Lovie and Steve Batten.
In their loss at Oakridge,
the locals carried- the
balance of play, but just
couldn’t find the range, mis
sing some open nets on some
unusually bad bounces.

Colonials get tie
with college club
In their only start this
week in the South Huron
intermediate hockey league,
the Grand Bend Colonials
were held to an 8-8 tie by the
Centralia College Saints.
The Colonials and the
Saints met last night,
Wednesday in a return game
at the Huron Park arena and
Friday night the Grand Bend
club will play host to the
Goderich Sailors. Game time
at the Zurich arena is 8.30
p.m.
A goal by Wayne
Chalmers, his second of the
night with only 29 seconds
left in the third period
allowed Centralia College to
salvage the draw with the
Colonials.
The outcome was in doubt
from start to finish with
neither club able to get more
than a two goal lead at
anytime.
Paul Maguire converted a
pass from Mike Desjardine
and Tom Desjardine
registered on a three-way
effort with Pete Gil and Cam
Haist to give Grand Bend an
early 2-0 lead.This was
short-lived as the Saints
came roaring back. Wayne
Chalmers notched the first
goal on a pass from Rick Van
Oss and then provided the
assist for a successful shot
by Vince Hulshof.
Near the end of the first
period, Cam Haist scored on
a play started by Pete Gil to
put the Colonials in front 3-2.
The score continued to
change back and forth in the
middle 20 minutes of play.
Kyle Pedersen evened the
count on an unassisted effort
before Grand Bend regained
the lead on a successful shot
by Cam Haist. Paul Maguire
assisted.
In quick succession, Brian
Gilpin and Murray Connolly
counted for the College and
Paul Maguire, Tom
Anderson and Mac
Richardson replied for the
Colonials.
In the third period Marty
Becker and captain Brian
Gilpin were the CCAT
marksmen in addition to the
game tying score by Wayne
Chalmers.
The only Grand Bend goal
of the third period came
from the stick of Peter Gil on
a pass from Tom Anderson.
Tom Richardson was in
goal for Grand Bend,
replacing regular netminder
Tom Hayter.
