Quick action by the Exeter
fire department, plus some
support from a member of
the Hensall brigade, averted
a disaster in Exeter Thurs
day morning when the paint
room at Northlander Mobile
housing caught fire.
The firm’s sprinkler
system also played a major
role in stopping the fire.
President Bill Smith told
the T-A this week that the
plant lost
hours’ production time,
most of that while the
employees sopped up the
mess.
He said damage was
minimal and quickly added
they were counting their
blessings.
The fire started under
some rather unusual cir
cumstances during a routine
maintenance program
carried out at the plant.
Two men were outside
burning paint off small
metal trestles used in the
plant. Some of the dust from
the trestles ignited and a
grass fire ensued.

at the paint room.
Some quick thinking by
foreman Bruce Moir, who
also happens to be assistant
fire chief in Hensall, kept
the flames under control un
til Exeter brigade arrived .
“His training and coolness
enabled him to do the right
thing,” Smith said of Moir,
in explaining how the latter
grabbed a fire extinguisher
containing foam to knock
down the blaze.
The company president
also noted that the speed of
the fire raging up the wall in
the paint room was actually

just over two hours before the plant was back in operation.

OUT IT GOES — Employees at Northlander Mobile Housing
