The firm’s sprinkler system also played a major role in stopping the fire. President Bill Smith told the T-A this week that the plant lost hours’ production time, most of that while the employees sopped up the mess. He said damage was minimal and quickly added they were counting their blessings. The fire started under some rather unusual cir­ cumstances during a routine maintenance program carried out at the plant. Two men were outside burning paint off small metal trestles used in the plant. Some of the dust from the trestles ignited and a grass fire ensued. One of the men the plant to get a tinguisher and the tually followed through the outside fire door at the paint room. Some quick thinking by foreman Bruce Moir, who also happens to be assistant fire chief in Hensall, kept the flames under control un­ til Exeter brigade arrived . “His training and coolness enabled him to do the right thing,” Smith said of Moir, in explaining how the latter grabbed a fire extinguisher containing foam to knock down the blaze.
