V_________ _ __________ The football teams at South Huron District High School enjoyed their best week of the 1978 Huron-Perth Conference season. On their home field Thursday afternoon the junior Panthers scored a 29 - 7 victory over Norwell of Palmerston and the seniors followed with their best performance of the season as they recorded a 48 - 6 win. The next two games, the final ones in the regular schedule are very important ones for South Huron as far as the playoff picture is concerned. The two local clubs will be in Stratford today, Thursday to meet Northwestern and Tuesday afternoon they will be on their home field with the tough Goderich Vikings providing the opposition. Juniors dominate stats The South Huron juniors held a wide edge over Norwell in all statistical departments and were full value for their win. The Panthers rolled up 386 yards on the ground and picked up 106 yards by way of the air waves in recording a total of 26 first downs. Norwell could manage only eight first downs and their total yards gained were only 190. Coach Doug Ellison had high praise for quarterback Steve Pearce who moved the ball well and called his best game of the year. Pearce and Rick Lin denfield shared scoring honours with two touch downs each. More than half of the points accumulated by South Huron came in the first quarter. Rick Lindenfield scored both of his majors in the first 15 minutes on runs of 50 and 18 yards, respectively. He booted and one convert and the other convert was a two- pointer on a pass from Steve Pearce to Dave Shaw. In the second period, Steve Pearce started his’ scoring tactics with a touchdown on a three yard run which went unconverted. , The Panther signal caller notched his second six- pointer on a gallop of seven yards in the third quarter. This time Wayne Smith ran the ball in for a two point convert. Rick Lindenfield was the workhorse on the Panthers z ground attack with 215 yards on 17 carries. Pat Cyr was next with 79 yards on 10 tries and Wayne Smith gained 66 yards on 11 attempts through the opposing line. In the passing department Steve Pearce was good on five attempts for a total of 106 -. yards. Wayne Smith hauled in two tosses and Bill Glover, Pat Cyr and Mike Taylor each nabbed one pass. Special contributions were made by Peter Tuckey as he intercepted two passses, Al Gaiser hit an opposing ball carrier for a five yard and Greg Prout recovered a fumbled punt. On defence, Rich Fletcher made six key tackles while Greg Prout and Gary Spurn were good on five big stops a piece and Al Gaiser, Dave Bell and Dave “Dinger” Bell each had four key hits. Rich Fletcher and Dave “Dinger” Bell were named the best defensive players while Steve Pearce and Norman Regier were ac corded offensive honours. Seniors Show Desire “We finally put one together and had lots of desire towin.” Those were the comments of coach Ron Bogart after the senior Panthers blasted Norwell by a score of 48-6. The Panthers started out as if they were going to run Norwell right off the field. On the first play from scrimmage, Rob Pryde in tercepted a Norwell pass and very quickly Doug Brooks went 70 yards for a touchdown with super block ing on the play. The same thing happened after the next kickoff. The first Norwell play, again a pass was picked off. This time Dave Atthill made the interception and raced 40 yards for six points. The long run was nullified as Jeff Fuller was called for clipping. This was only a temporary delay in the Panther scoring plans. Doug Hoffman ripped off 11 yards on the next play and Larry Dawson followed for a gain of the same distance and a second touchdown. Steve Beer was good on the convert and the score was quickly 13-0. On the third series of plays for Norwell they lost five yards in two attempts and were forced to kick. Brad Taylor returned the punt seven yards and on the first play. Larry Dawson rambled over the Norwell goal line from 26 yards out. Dave Bogart threw a pass to John Byrne for a two point convert tq.up the score to 21-0. After receiving the ball as Norwell failed to get a first down it took the Panthers only four plays for their fourth major score of the first quarter. The big play was a 33 yard pass and run play from Dave Bogart to Kevin Hern. The latter picked up the six points on a two yard plunge. Steve Beer converted and the Panthers were ahead 28- 0 at quarter time. Although the Panthers cooled out a little in the se cond period they scored on touchdown on a one yard plunge by Kevin Hern. Steve Beer’s convert attempt was good. The ma jor was set up by a sen sational one-handed catch of a Bogart pass by John Byrne. The only Norwell touchdown came in the third quarter on a long pass play that covered 80 yards. Steve Beer took care of the South Huron scoring in the final period with a touchdown on a 10 yard pass from Bogart and a successful convert. The Panthers racked up a total offence of -438. yards while holding Norwell to 202 yards. Of this yardage 215 came on the ground and 143 through the air. Added to this was penalty yardage of 80. Kevin Hern gained 68 yards on 15 carries, Larry Dawson picked up 57 yards on nine tries and Doug Brooks was good for 74 yards on only two attempts. On defence Doug Ray mond contributed 11 key tackles, John Byrne made 10 big stops and Ed Hunter- Duvar and Doug Hoffman were in for seven and five key tackles, respectively. The players of the game were Larry Dawson on offence and Dave Atthill on defence. Coach Ron Bogart said there were several votes for the whole team and the entire line. The Exeter Hawks opened defence of their Western Junior “D” group in convin cing style, Friday, as they skated away from the Lucan Irish in the third period for a 6-1 win, but they dropped a 5- 4 decision in Port Stanley Sunday as the Lions scored late to snatch the victory. This week, the Hawks will get tests from two of their group rivals, meeting the Mitchell Hawks in an 8:00 p.m. start at the rec centre on Friday and then battling Seaforth in another home game on Sunday night at 7:30. In Friday’s home opener against the Irish, the Hawks scored four goals in the final period to post their win, dis playing a potent power play that resulted in four of their six goals. Goalies Steve Beer and Kevin Wood both displayed mid-season form as they kept the score close through the first two periods. Veteran Fred Mommersteeg tallied the Hawks first goal of the season when he finished off a power play with Ken Pinder and Jamie Caldwell at the 8:45 mark of the open ing stanza. Lucan knotted the count mid-way through the second when Paul Medd blinked the light on a play Glenn and Tod and it appeared would head for with a 1-1 tie. However, Dave Kinsmen took a puck from netminder Steve Beer and beat several Lucan players on his way to potting what proved to be the winner with only 11 seconds left in the middle frame. Dave Bogart and Mommersteeg scored power play goals before the mid way mark of the third period, and after Ken Pinder added the team’s Jifth goal, Terry Caldwell scored on another power play to finish off the potent third period attack. Picking up single assists on the third period goals were Steve Jennison, Ron with Ron McKinlay the teams the third Rally fails The Hawks had their po tent power play working well again on Sunday night when they travelled to Port Stanley, but in the end it was the Lions power play that gave them their 5-4 verdict over the locals. The teams traded goals in the first period, Steve Jen- nison hitting the target for the Hawks with a solo effort. Port Stanley scored twice in the middle frame and again early in the third to open up a 4-1 lead. The Hawks started to roll with Jennison and Brad Taylor connecting on power plays and Ken Varley then notched the equalizer with the teams playing even. The Lions pulled out the win with just over four minutes left when they scored on a power play with Preston Dearing off for trip ping. Six different players shared in the Hawks assist department in the contest, those being recorded by Mommersteeg, McKellar, Varley, Kinsman, Pinder and goalie Steve Beer with his second in two nights. Randy Lovie played the first two periods in Sunday’s contest, but turned over the duties to Beer in the final stanza when his knee injury started to give him trouble. The Lions had 10 penalties, including three majors, while the Hawks had eight, including one major, that going to Bilcke who squared off with Greg Westaway near the end of the game.
