HomeMy WebLinkAboutTimes-Advocate, 1978-10-19, Page 33School group draws 100 The Lucan-Biddulph Home, School & Community Association held its first general meeting for the 1978-79 season in the Lucan School auditorium on Thursday evening, October 12. There was a tremendous turnout of close to 100 people including parents, teachers and executives. Margaret Carrol, im­ mediate past president, introduced Dave Pike of Lucan as the new president and asked for volunteers to assist the executive with their endeavours for the new term. Norm Steeper, vice­ principal, introduced the new principal. Wallace McLay who gave a short talk on the functions of teachers and parents in the education of our children. He mentioned the sup­ porting staff such as school secretary, Gwen Grose, the bus drivers, substitute teachers, parents who come into the school to assist, and the custodians, following which he introduced the current teaching staff. The next meeeting will be held on November 9 at the Lucan School when there will be a presentation by the teachers on how to teach a given subject from Kin­ dergarten through to Grade 8._____________________ One in twenty Canadians suffers from arthritis, ac­ cording to The Arthritis Society. 3T. T-A photo United Church news Luke 15 is often called the lost and found department of the Bible and Rev. Keith Brown spoke on the three parables contained therein Sunday at the Lucan United Church. Jesus used these parables to point out to the Pharisees His relationship with “the lost”. The Church was called into being to be His Body and carry on after Him. Lost people are not looking for open church doors, as they know when church is. We must go out and bring the word of God to them. There is a constant yearning for God and only when this is found can there be “rejoicing in heaven over the finding of the one who was lost”. Next Sunday, Don Langford of Kerwood will tell of the Lord’s work in Algeria, Africa. Don and his wife, Carol served three years under the United Church as agricultural missionaries there. Following the service the Friendship Unit will hold its Fall “Friendship Lun­ cheon’’, to which all members and friends are invited. One nice big bag of mitts, toques and scarves came in this week. Bring yours along any time now and leave in the kitchen, labelled “For the Mitten Tree”. If you do not knit, why not contribute a set or two which you could buy. All contributions gratefully accepted. YARNELLES MEET Members of the Lucan No. 2 4-H Homemaking Club met at the home of the Assistant Leader, Mrs. John Van- derLoo, on Wednesday evening, October 11. The girls chose the name “The Lucan Yarnelles” and will be known as this group for the balance of the course. Mrs. VanderLoo and Leader, Mrs. Adrien DeBrouwer demonstrated two needlepoint stitches the Gobelin and the Continental and the members made two samples, the latter with- a monogram worked out first on graph paper. Students from this district and nearby, receiving diplomas and awards are as follows. Secondary School Gradua­ tion Diplomas - Dianne Lynn, Marie Cunningham, Joanne Cunningham, Eric Davlaeminck, Karen Hodgson, Ronna Hughes, Brenda Lee, Cynthia Marshall, Richard Marshall and Janet Spruytte. Honours Secondary School Graduation Diplomas - Chris Mawdsley, Andre Pera and Mary Lou Tasko. Year V Graduates: Chris Mawdsley received the D.A. Vansteenkiste Aw'ard for Persistence in Achieving a Goal. Mary Lou Tasko received the following awards: out­ standing female Athlete 1977-78 — S.A.C. outstanding student in the class of 1977- 78 — S.A.C. Coaches Award - Coaching Staff, Jean Bon­ nard Award in French, Op­ timist Club of Parkhill Scholarship. At the Undergraduate Award Assembly held at the school Monday, Marilyn Groenewegen received the K. Arora Accounting Award, West Williams Award in English, Math and Physics and the General Proficiency Award from Middlesex County Board of Education. Congratulations! to all of you. The pine cone wreath lottery, sponsored by the Clandeboye Women’s Institute and held at the Craft Show in Lucan on Saturday was won by Nancy St. Pierre of Lucan. The sum of $215.75 was raised from that project. Mr. and Mrs. Dave Kestle spent the weekend with relatives in Windsor and Detroit. Arnold Kilmer is recuperating at his home from a bad fall, last week. The sympathy of the com­ munity is extended to the Morgan families in the loss of a wife, mother, and grand­ mother, Mr-s. Maurice Morgan. Murray Thompson» is a patient in Strathroy Hospital. Mr. and Mrs. Rea Neil and Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Rollings visited Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Alton Neil and Donald of Edgewood. Alton, was celebrating his birthday and was home for .the day from Craigholme Nursing home. Mrs. Clarence Hardy, Lucan was hostess Sunday afternoon for the Hardy family bridal shower in honour of Brenda Scott whose marriage to Robert Smith takes place October 28 in Clandeboye United Church. Bruce Hodgins, Peter­ borough was a Monday even­ ing visitor with his brothers, Arthur and Victor Hodgins. Service at Clandeboye United Church next Sunday at 9:45 a.m. will have a guest speaker, Mr. Don Langford of Kerwood who will tell of the Missionary work in Algeria, Africa, Don and his wife, Carol served 3 years under the United Church as- Agricultural Missionaries there. Plan to attend this service. Mr. and Mrs. Jim O’Con­ nor have vacated the school house apartment and have purchased a home in Gran­ ton. Many will remember Elect at St. Pat's The student council •elections at St. Patrick’s School took place Friday, October 13. This is the event which is considered by the grade 8 students to be the event of the year and par­ ticipation was again this year just excellent. Twelve students participated and fulfilled all the requirements expected of them such as pre election speeches etc. The twelve nominated were; The four elected for the 1978-79 school year were : Jeff Lemmon, Terry Maslen, Marius Vandenberg and Paul Van Geel. Others nominated were Kathy Cocquyt, Francis Giesen, Sandy Hartman, Theresa Jongeneelen, Rosemary Martens, Kevin Morkin, Monika Rosch and Ron Toonders^^ Can you imagine anyone as unhappy as a woman with a live secret and a dead telephone? the O’Connors when they hosted the CFPL-Radio Show “Breakfast with Brady’’ three years ago, Mrs. Bonnie Laws and young daughter, are the new tenants. 4-H Clubs Clandeboye #2, 4-H Homemaking Club have completed their first three meetings with leader Helen Cunningham and assistant Corine Rosch in charge of the project “Needlepoint”, There are nine members. Officers are president - Kim Harrison, vice- president and press reporter - Dorothy Cunningham, treasurer - Sylvia Rosch, lunch committee - Carol Cunningham, Christine Markus, Jackie and Monica Rosch. The name of the club is “Clandeboye Grannies”. The roll call for the second meeting was “Show your design tor tree choice ar­ ticle”. The leaders showed the girls how to do the Goblin stitch and the Con­ tinental stitch. The roll call for the seniors at the third meeting was “Name the colpur scheme that you have chosen for your free choice article and show an example of your colour scheme.” For the Juniors, “Name your favourite colour and what colours you would put with it for a colour scheme.’’ The .leaders taught the girls the cross stitch and the bargello stitch. Red Cross Blood Clinic The community is asked to keep in mind the Red Cross Blood Clinic being held in Lucan Community Centre Monday evening, Oc­ tober 23, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Plan to attend and give the “Gift of Life”.
