From early October 1978 until mid-January 1979, hockey buffs across Canada and the United States will, for the first time, become more than armchair selectors as they participate in a ballot to choose the starting line-up for the National Hockey League all- star team to meet the Soviets in a three-game series The series, described by Alan Eagleson, Ex ecutive Director of the National Hockey League Players’ Association as: “a true test of world hockey supremacy”, is considered so important that the nor mal league schedule will be closed down for the week the games are played in New York, February 8,10 and 11. The balloting has been made possible by Wilkinson Sword Canada who, in co-operation with the NHL and NHLPA, will be distributing millions of ballots through all NHL arenas and thousands of super markets and retail stores wherever Wilkinson products are sold. Fans may vote and change their minds as often as they wish. Each ballot will carry the names of 80 NHL players who have been nominated by a special panel of the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association. The players will be listed alphabetically and by position. There will also be space for write-in nominees, like Bobby Orr, who is back on the ice this fall. Each NHL team will be represented in the ballot by a minimum of two players. The ballots will be counted by an independent tabulation house and up-to-date results will be releas ed regularly beginning early November. An additional bonus for voting fans will be a 50 cent cash refund coupon with each ballot, against Wilkinson II shaving products.- When the fans have picked the starting line, the remainder of the players will be chosen by the team manager, and/or the coaches of the NHL all-star team. The NHL-Soviet series will replace the traditional all-star games between the Prince of Wales and Clarence Campbell conferences. New show for ladies Look for a new television series this fall. It will be known as Woman Outdoors. The half hour shows will • feature women engaged in various outdoor activities ( such as fly fishing, sky diving and nature photography. Outdoor writer and broadcaster Doreen Fawcett is host of the series which will be seen on stations in Canada and the United States. Among the special guests will be Sheila Link of New Jersey, a consultant to the National Rifle Association and a crack shot with rifle and bow and arrow. Liz Mendes from Minnesota, formerly with Evinrude Motors will discuss care and handling of out board motors and Pat Judges an Ontario racing pilot who placed fourth in the 1978 Angel Derby will show how she flies for fun and profit. Quotes Bob Griese on Ron Jaworski of the Eagles having the best arm in the National Football League, “He could pass a football through a car wash and it wouldn’t come out wet.” Houston Oiler coach Bum Phillips after rookie running back Earl Campbell rushed for 151 yards in an exhibition game againstDallas,“I think he will survive the cut.” _ .Free day Sunday is “meet the players day” when the Lucan-Ilderton Jets take on the Preston Jesters at 2 p.m. at the Ilderton arena and the price is right. No admission will be charged to see the game and fans are invited to stay and meet the players afterwards in the hall upstairs and enjoy hot dogs and coffee. T-A photo Z The Exeter Hawks ended up with a tie and a loss in two exhibition titles at the rec centre this weekend as they prepared for the season opener. They’ll start defense of their group championship on Friday night against the Lucan Irish, with game time at 8:00 p.m. in the rec centre. Sundayevening, they’ll host Port Stanley at 7:30. In their exhibition tilts, the Hawks picked up a 4-4 tie with the Wingham Ironmen on Friday and then dropped a 6-4 verdict to their perennial foes from Mitchell on Sunday afternoon. In view of the injuries and doubtful status of some players that hampered their pre-season training, coach Ron Bogart said he was pleased with the team’s play on the weekend. In Friday’s game, they went without the services of Phil Knight and Fred Mommersteeg, while Steve Jennison missed almost half the game. That gave them only 13 skaters. Wingham jumped into an early lead, but Jamie Caldwell knotted the count with two seconds to go in the first period when his second effort paid off. Drawing assists were Don McKellar and Dave Bogart. Kinsman, along with midget graduate Dave Atthill. Scoring for Exeter were Dave Kinsman, Don McKellar and Steve Jen nison. Jamie Caldwell helped out on a pair of those, while drawing single assists were Bogart, Preston Dearing and Kerry Bedard. In Sunday’s game,' Mitchell scored five goals in less than four minutes midway through the middle frame to overcome a two-goal deficit and pull out the victory in the battle between the division finalists of last season. One of the tallies came on a power play, while two were scored while Exeter enjoyed a man advantage. Terry Caldwell and Ken Varley, two Hensail area pucksters, gave the Hawks a • 2-1 lead in the first period, and Phil Knight added a single in the second before Mitchell put on their spree. Don McKellar picked up the only goal of the third period. Knight added a pair of assists to his goal, while Kerry Bedard also drew two assists. Helping out on one goal each were Varley, Brad Taylor, Terry Caldwell and Fred Mommersteeg. Steve Beer and Randy Lovie shared the netminding duties in each game and each had five goals scored against him. While coach Bogart experimented with several combinations over the weekend, .one of the major changes local fans may notice this year is a switch between Ken Pinder and Steve Jennison. Pinder has moved back to defense, while Jennison was working at centre.
