At least one seat open in Tuckersmith South Huron District High School. We have our ac tivities with ARC Industires in Dashwood (handicapped adults) and also with Huron Hope in Huron Park (han dicapped children.) WHEN? - When do we get together for our meetings? We have a general meeting once a month and some activity period meetings (short meetings at the end of the school day) when we are planning an activity. WHY? - Why do we have YACMR? The handicapped people need to be accepted in society and need to live as normal a life as possible. We hope to assist them in at taining that goal. We can’t do this alone; we need your help. What can you do? Join YACMR, or if you are older than 22 years of age visit ARC Industries, Huron Hope or the Huron Hope Nursery in Dashwood and offer assistance. Be a volunteer or just visit them once in a while. They need friends and acceptance. The following “YACMR Believes” explains in another way what we are trying to do it also provides the rights of a handicapped person. "YACMR Believes" ' - the “Mentally Retarded” (“MR’s”) are first class people. - the “Mentally Retarded” (“MR’s”) have the right to live as normal a life aS possible within their capabilities. - we will assist the ‘‘Mentally Retarded” (MR’s”) where needed, to enable them to participate in their community - we must strive for the goal of independence, nor malization and integration for the “Mentally Retarded” (“MR’s”) within their capabilities so our group will no longer be needed other than as friends. - meanwhile, we are striving to be friends of the ‘‘Mentally Retarded” (“MR’s”) and working with them as much as possible. This was written years ago and has never been changed. There is one thing in “YACMR Believes” that should be changed - the words, “Mentally Retarded” or “MR’s”. WetJoprselves are labelling them. They should not be labelled anymore than a person wearing glasses should be labelled, for the latter is a handicap as well. They are not objects to be pushed around and looked down upon. They are people like you and me and should be treated like you would like to be treated, Right now YACMR has to change this tendency in society to label people as being “Mentally Retarded”. We would like you to help us change this. Next time you are going to say ‘‘Mentally Retarded” remember that they are people too! We hope we have provided enough information about YACMR to get you in terested. For more in formation contact Sandra Schroeder at 237-3408, Teresa Van Raay at 237-3496 (or at the High School), or the South Huron District Association for the Mentally Retarded, P.O. Box 29, Dashwood, Ontario, N0M 1N0 or phone 237-3637. Teresa Van Raay Three members of Tuckersmith council have announced that they will seek re-election in the up coming municipal election. Reeve Ervin Sillery said that he will be standing for re-election along with councillors Robert Fotheringham and Frank Falconer. Fotheringham was first elected to council in 1976 termed and his first two years as a “learning ex perience”. Falconer has served Tuckersmith a total of nine years on council and sees the implementation of a secondary plan for the remainder of the township and the possible introduction of market value assessment as important items which the new council could be dealing with. Deputy-reeve Robert Bell said its possible he will be running but has not yet made up his mind. The other incumbent councillor Bob Drummond will not be eligible for re election since he has moved out of Tuckersmith. Nominations open October 16 and close October 23.
