CHURCH CLOSES — The final service was held at St. Paul's Anglican Church in Hensall, Sum
day. The church had served the community for 101 years. Mrs. Frank Forrest, organist for a
number of years, is shown on the church steps with her 88-year-old mother, Mrs. Fanny Clark,
oldest member of the congregation. The two ladies were on hand Tuesday to provide lunch
after the funeral of John Petty, who died on Saturday. He had been the oldest member of the
parish at 94. . Staff photo

Members to join Exeter
Close doors at St. Paul's
About 35 people were on
hand Sunday to witness the
final service at St. Paul’s
Anglican Church, Hensall,
terminating a 101 year
history.
The closing, which had
been requested by the
congregation due to the
small number of members,
was undertaken by the Arch
deacon of Perth, Cyril
Ladds, respresenting the
Bishop. He was assisted by
the Rev. George Anderson.
The members of the
congregation have been
invited to join with Trivitt
Memorial Church in Exeter.
Rev. Anderson said the
travelling should not be a
great problem, noting that
many other members of the
Exeter congregation travel
as far.
Rev. Anderson said the St.
Paul’s congregation hope
that another religious
denomination may take over
the Hensall church so that it
could continue to serve in
that capacity, rather than
becoming a commercial
establishment.
Many of the church
communion items will be
transferred to Exeter, where
a special St. Paul’s chapel
will be designated.
Ironically, the oldest
member of the church, John
Petty, died Saturday at the
Bluewater Rest Home. He
would have been 94 in
October.
Mr. Petty was a descen
dant of the Petty family
which founded Hensall and
St. Paul’s Anglican Church.
Another member of the
family was killed in World
War I while serving with the
161st regiment, whose colors
are on display in Trivitt
Memorial Church.
One of the visitors at
Sunday’s final service was
I?r. T. M. B. Parker, who
served the parish during the
1930s. He is retired in London
and journeyed to Hensall
with his wife for the closing
service.
